Job Summary The Obstetrical Surgical Technician is a member of the obstetrical healthcare team who provides technical support to the obstetrician/surgeon and registered nurse in the operating and delivery room settings. This position assists in the preparation of supplies and equipment for surgical and delivery procedures and provides the appropriate instrumentation necessary for the obstetrician/surgeon to perform these procedures. The OB Surgical Tech is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of trends in the operating room, including new products, procedures, and physicians’ techniques. Provides assistance in the maintenance of aseptic cleaning of the Operating Room pre and post procedure and maintains a par level of supplies within the Family Birth Center. Performs indirect and direct patient care of the neonate, and female patients under the direct supervision of a RN. Provides patient care support, maintenance of nursing unit, housekeeping and dietary tasks, and clerical support for the nursing unit. Responsibilities Assist in the preparation of supplies and equipment for surgical and delivery procedures. Provide instrumentation and maintain a sterile field. Maintain current knowledge of trends and new products in the operating room. Assist in the aseptic cleaning of the operating room before and after procedures. Maintain par level of supplies within the Family Birth Center. Perform indirect and direct patient care of neonates and female patients under RN supervision. Provide patient care support, maintain the nursing unit, housekeeping and dietary tasks, and clerical support. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or GED. Preferred: Graduation from an approved Operating Room Technician program. Experience: 3 years of Surgical Scrub Tech experience preferred. Licensure: Current Surgical Tech Certification required, or for those employed prior to July 1, 2021, registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine required. Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Ability to create and maintain a sterile field, knowledge of specialized instrumentation, ability to read and interpret safety rules and procedures, common sense understanding of instructions, problem‑solving in standardized situations, basic medical terminology, and computer skills. Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred: None. Competencies Communication: Collaborates with the leadership team and UCIC to identify and resolve unit issues. Keeps co‑workers and intra‑op staff informed of any updates/issues. Follows written instructions as needed. Technical Competency: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patients served. Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application. Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist. Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique. Physical Demands Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.
