Job description

Child Protective Services Worker (Social Service Specialist 1) The Oregon Department of Human Services is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. This role focuses on ensuring the safety and well‑being of Oregon’s children through investigation, case management, advocacy, and court representation. Responsibilities Gather information through interviews and home observations to evaluate safety and risk in child abuse or neglect cases, taking protective action when necessary. Create safety and service plans that reflect each family's needs and connect them with medical, mental health, parenting, and community resources. Prepare accurate case documentation, including reports, assessments, safety plans, and notes. Engage in child‑safety meetings and collaborate effectively with families, professionals, and community partners. Testify in court hearings and initiate court action when needed. Minimum Qualifications A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. A bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field. Or a bachelor’s degree unrelated to Human Services with: One year of Human Services related experience; or Completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency; or An associate degree with two years of Human Services related experience; or One year of Human Services related experience and related training, coursework, or certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency. All degrees must be completed, not in progress. Essential Attributes Experience conducting interviews, investigations, or formal reviews to determine compliance with standards, policies, regulations, or laws. Experience producing detailed reports or documents that include conclusions and recommended actions. Experience using crisis intervention, conflict resolution, or behavior management techniques. Experience communicating complex technical or legal information clearly in verbal and written formats for people with varied educational, language, and cultural backgrounds. Experience organizing work and managing time to meet mandated deadlines. Work Conditions Work takes place in offices, participants’ homes, and various community locations. The schedule is Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm PT, with possible fluctuations based on service needs. Occasional compensated overtime, including evening and weekend hours, and a rotating on‑call schedule that includes evening and weekend work are required. Frequent travel for transporting children or families and completing case‑related activities, including occasional overnight travel, is expected. You may encounter situations requiring quick decision‑making for safety, and activity may involve traversing stairs, moving across uneven terrain, and assisting children (up to 50pounds) in and out of car seats. Interaction with individuals experiencing trauma or emotional distress may occur. Benefits Cost of living adjustments. Annual salary increases up to the top of the listed salary range.
