Public Works Inspector I/II – Land Development Section Position within the Building and Safety Department: The Land Development Section’s Public Works Inspection Team reviews and inspects construction activities to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, coordinating closely with Land Development Engineers, Permit Technicians, contractors, developers, and utility companies. Responsibilities Review plans, specifications, and conduct inspections for street, traffic signal, storm drain, and other right‑of‑way improvements to ensure compliance with codes and City standards. Review traffic control devices and placement to improve safety. Provide high‑quality customer service through regular interactions with contractors and members of the public. Maintain effective communication and coordination with other City departments, contractors, public members, and utility agencies, and document inspection activities thoroughly. Education and Experience Graduation from high school with college‑level coursework in Civil Engineering or public works construction and design, or equivalent training, is required. Public Works Inspector I : Two years of sub‑professional engineering, journey‑level public works, or heavy construction experience, including some construction inspection experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of construction principles, methods, materials, equipment, safety hazards, applicable laws, regulations, and codes governing public works projects; mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry); technical report writing and correspondence preparation; ability to maintain cooperative relationships with engineers, developers, contractors, and the public; independent judgment; ability to learn routine and moderately difficult construction inspection techniques; ability to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints, specifications, surveys, legal descriptions, and tract descriptions; ability to prepare clear correspondence and technical reports involving mathematical computations; ability to schedule own workload. Special Requirements Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
