Job description

Position Title: Dean of Students Middle

Department: Instructional Services Division

Reports To: School Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

SUMMARY:

The Dean of Students is responsible for promoting a safe orderly and positive learning environment by overseeing student discipline behavior interventions and student accountability. Working closely with administration teachers counselors families and community partners the Dean of Students supports students in meeting behavioral expectations while fostering a culture of respect and responsibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administer the schools student discipline program in accordance with district policies and the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Investigate student misconduct and determine appropriate disciplinary
  • Maintain accurate documentation of disciplinary incidents and ensure timely entry into the student information system.
  • Conduct student conferences restorative meetings and re-entry conferences following
  • Monitor behavior trends and implement proactive interventions to reduce disciplinary
  • Supervise in-school suspension (ISS) and coordinate out-of-school suspension (OSS) procedures as needed.
  • Build positive relationships with students to encourage appropriate behavior and personal responsibility.
  • Collaborate with counselors administrators teachers and support staff to develop behavior intervention plans.
  • Identify students needing additional behavioral or social-emotional supports and make appropriate referrals.
  • Participate in Student Intervention Team (SIT) MTSS 504 and other student support meetings as appropriate.
  • Assist with developing and reinforcing school-wide behavioral
  • Supervise student arrival dismissal lunch hallways assemblies and extracurricular activities as assigned.
  • Respond promptly to student conflicts emergencies and behavioral
  • Assist with school safety procedures and crisis
  • Communicate disciplinary decisions and behavioral concerns with parents and
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to address classroom management
  • Provide guidance and support to staff regarding student behavior interventions and district discipline procedures.
  • Assist administrators with attendance initiatives related to student
  • Support implementation of PBIS restorative practices or other district behavior
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Valid South Carolina educator certificate with administrative
  • Successful experience as a teacher or school
  • Knowledge of adolescent development behavior management and restorative
  • Strong communication conflict resolution and organizational
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students staff and families while maintaining high expectations.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Masters Degree; minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching or equivalent combination of

education/experience that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:

Valid South Carolina Teaching License in one of the following areas:

  • Elementary Principal (Tier I Tier II)
  • Elementary Supervisor
  • Secondary Principal (Tier I Tier II)
  • Secondary Supervisor

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read analyze and interpret professional journals technical procedures instructional manuals financial reports or governmental regulations. Ability to design and write professional development programs reports business correspondences procedural manuals and data entry procedures. Ability to effectively present professional development and training and respond to questions from groups of trainees and administrators. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups employees and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of assessment data. Ability to apply basic concepts of statistical analysis fractions percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to comprehend interpret and apply state and federal regulations to related academic initiatives. Ability to effectively apply knowledge of academic initiatives programs and services. Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. The position requires meeting deadlines and interacting with teachers and administrators. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee.

Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to implement a flexible work schedule to meet the reporting deadlines. Ability to perform duties with a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students parents staff and the school community.

The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as boxes of materials. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as furniture or boxes of materials.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit stand walk talk listen and/or reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours.

Duties of the job require frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.
