Job description

Job Overview The Fuels Module Leader (SO) is responsible for assisting the Fire Management Officer (FMO) in coordinating the activities of the Fuels Crew. The Fuels Crew Module Leader supervises the Fuels Crew in day‑to‑day tasks, risk mitigation project work, wildfire response operations, and maintains a safety‑first foundation for all aspects of wildland fire management activities. The position offers a 40‑hour week, Division: Sheriff Support Services Division, Management Level: Supervisor – 1st Line. Responsibilities Directs and supervises the fuels crew in performing mitigation, wildfire suppression, and fire management duties. May personally engage in fighting forest, range, and other wildland fires and participating in prescribed fire operations. Directs and supervises moderately complex fuels management projects and participates in more complex projects, including gathering data for monitoring programs and implementing prescribed fire, mechanical, and biological treatments, inventorying fuel beds, and piling vegetation debris. Hikes on rigorous terrain to establish project perimeters, mark trees, locate access points, scout fires, establish safety zones and fire line locations. Uses chainsaws, log chokers, chains, ropes and hand tools to conduct fuels management operations. Moves, maintains, and troubleshoots machinery and equipment attachments, including skid steers, woodchippers, and related machinery. Oversees sawyers and other laborers during fuels projects and equipment maintenance. Conducts Type3 prescribed fire operations and may operate light vehicles, 4x4s, UTVs, and heavy equipment. Provides education and interacts with community organizers and neighbors to explain the effects of fuels projects. Identifies resources needed to accomplish incident objectives, drives, inspects, maintains, and troubleshoots vehicles and heavy equipment, and inspects and maintains water pumps for suppression use. Performs firing and burnout operations under supervision and provides incident management at the Type4 level. Provides tactical directions on attacking, controlling, mopping up fires, building or patrolling fire lines, cleaning up burned areas, and suppressing spot fires. Coordinates with Fire Management Officers to establish benchmarks and performance objectives for the crew. Reviews geospatial data to prepare on‑site layouts and schedules work sites based on priorities, weather, and site access. Leads the development and implementation of training programs, including fire management classes, equipment use and maintenance classes, general safety classes, and other agency‑required training. Creates daily briefings on fire conditions and current fire activity; maintains records and provides updates on current projects. Reviews and presents after‑action reports to leadership, using them to create training programs and inform future operations. Plans and maintains a budget for crew operations and project work, including credit‑card purchases, travel, training, and related items. Supervises staff in the area of responsibility, administers routine personnel matters, conducts performance evaluations, communicates short‑ and long‑term goals, and resolves non‑routine problems. Communicates changes in policy and procedures to direct reports and implements them as directed. Performs other duties as assigned. Must be available for evenings, weekends, holidays, and other hazard and emergency response activities. Qualifications Required: National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG): CRWB, ICT5, FAL2. Must pass The Work Capacity Test (WCT‑Pack Test) – a three‑mile hike within 45 minutes while carrying a 45‑pound pack. Within one year of hire: FEMA coursework including ICT‑100, IS‑700 JCSO’s Emergency Vehicle Operations Course, First Aid/CPR/AED/TCCC. Within three years of hire: ICT4. Preferred: TFLD, ENGB, FAL1, ICT4, RXB3; Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Heavy equipment operator experience. Education: GED or high school diploma. Experience: Minimum three years of relevant work experience, including at least one year of supervisory/lead work experience. Salary ranges from $31.79 to $47.69 per hour.
