• Core Education: Bachelor s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Management Information Systems (MIS), or Computer Science.

• Professional Accounting Credentials (Highly Desirable): Look for a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or Chartered Accountant (CA). When an SAP consultant has a CPA, they actually understand why the tax logic needs to behave a certain way, rather than blindly configuring fields.

2. Top Technical Skills Core SAP FICO Tax Competencies

• Tax Procedure Configuration: Deep knowledge of setting up tax calculation procedures (e.g., TAXUSX for US, TAXCA for Canada), access sequences, condition types, and tax codes.

• Cross-Module Integration (SD/MM): They must understand how data moves from Sales & Distribution (SD billing) and Materials Management (MM purchasing) into the General Ledger (FI-GL). The tax engine relies entirely on data sent from these logistics modules.

• Interface Architecture: Proven ability to configure RFC destinations, manage ALE/IDoc communications, and map standard BAPIs/APIs between SAP and the tax software.

External Tax Engine Expertise (Vertex / Sabrix) OPTIONAL

• Tax Assist Rules: The ability to write complex lookup and override rules directly inside the tax engine to handle custom product taxability matrixes or specific buyer exemptions.

• Geographic Jurisdiction Codes: Experience setting up tax jurisdiction code structures inside SAP so the tax engine accurately calculates state, county, city, and district-level taxes.

3. Experience Requirements

• Total SAP Experience: Minimum 7 to 10+ years of hands-on functional configuration inside SAP FICO modules.

• Tax Integration Footprint: At least 2 to 3 full lifecycle implementations or major migration projects where they successfully connected SAP to external engines (Vertex O-Series or Sabrix/ONESOURCE).

• S/4HANA vs. ECC Landscape: They should have experience with both traditional SAP ECC (TAXUSX procedures) and S/4HANA Finance (using the new Universal Journal architecture like table ACDOCA).
