Job description

Conservation Education Coordinator

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Conservation Education Coordinator based in Cheyenne, WY, with other locations statewide considered. This position develops, coordinates, and implements statewide conservation education initiatives that foster public understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of Wyoming's fish, wildlife, and habitats. This position provides strategic leadership for conservation education programming that serves diverse audiences, including youth, families, educators, and the general public. More specifically, this position leads statewide conservation education planning and evaluation through a program request and tracking system; develops engaging educational resources and digital content; manages Wyoming's Project WILD program; and serves as a resource for agency personnel, educators, and partners on public outreach and education. This position also coordinates and leads summer camp programs for youth, families, and college students at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp, with a focus on natural resources career development, outdoor skills, and conservation topics. This position collaborates extensively with internal and external partners to expand educational opportunities that support the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's mission and strategic goals.

Essential Functions:

  • Guide the agency's statewide conservation education initiatives to advance the Department's strategic goals around public understanding and appreciation of wildlife and conservation.
  • Track, evaluate, and report conservation education efforts using measurable outcomes to assess program effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinate Wyoming's Project WILD program, including educator workshops, curriculum distribution, partnership development, and statewide program promotion.
  • Develop educational curriculum, lesson plans, classroom activities, interpretive materials, and hands-on learning experiences for agency staff, educators, parents, and partner organizations.
  • Work with the marketing team to create engaging educational content for digital platforms, including the agency website, social media, and digital newsletters.
  • Plan, coordinate, and lead summer camps for youth, families, and collegiate audiences at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp.
  • Hire and supervise seasonal conservation educators to staff summer camps led by this position and by others on the education team.
  • Facilitate conservation education programs and represent the agency at community events throughout Wyoming.
  • Provide guidance, technical assistance, and educational expertise to agency personnel and partners.
  • Oversee program inventory and maintain program supplies and equipment.
  • Collaborate with Communications, Marketing, Regional Information and Education personnel, Hunter Education, wildlife managers, fisheries managers, and other Department staff to develop integrated education and outreach initiatives.

Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates with 24 years of experience coordinating or managing outreach initiatives, or outdoor education programs related to natural resources, wildlife conservation, or outdoor recreation. Knowledge:

  • Must have excellent communication skills, strong organizational and leadership skills, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a passion for working with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and educate effectively across a variety of formats, including interpersonal communication, instructional delivery, writing, public speaking, and digital media outreach.
  • Background knowledge in the principles of natural resource management (ie: the North American Model), educational program design, curriculum development, instructional methods, and experiential learning techniques.
  • Knowledge of program evaluation methods, performance measurement, and data collection.
  • Ability to supervise seasonal employees and serve as a collaborative team member.
  • Experience planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating education programs, summer camps or large public events.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically to increase conservation literacy and public engagement across Wyoming.
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions, and be comfortable pulling trailers, using firearms safely, and operating 4WD vehicles.
  • Solid risk management and decision making skills in an outdoor context. Swiftwater rescue and wilderness first responder training will be provided if not already certified.
  • This position requires frequent statewide travel, including weekends.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree (typically in Public Relations) Experience: 0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Public Relations) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Public Relations Specialist II OR Education & Experience Substitution: 4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Public Relations) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Public Relations Specialist II Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Travel and weekend work is required.
