Design Manager
The Design Manager guides potential homebuyers through the entire design and selections process for their new home, combining consultative sales, design expertise, and project ownership. This role meets directly with clients in an office setting, helps them choose finishes and materials, and maintains clear, consistent communication throughout the homebuilding journey to ensure a smooth and positive experience.
Responsibilities
- Meet with potential homebuyers in person to discuss their needs, preferences, and vision for their new home.
- Conduct consultative, in-office sales conversations to help persuade interested buyers to move forward with purchasing a home, without any outside or door-to-door sales.
- Lead clients through the full selections process, including choosing flooring, countertops, cabinets, and other interior and exterior finishes.
- Explain design options, materials, and finishes in a clear and approachable way, helping clients make informed decisions that align with their style and budget.
- Take complete ownership of the client journey from initial meeting through project completion, ensuring every step is managed and communicated effectively.
- Coordinate and document client selections and approvals at key checkpoints, including floor plans, covenants, electrical walk-throughs, tape and texture, trim, and cabinets.
- Obtain and track client sign-offs at each major milestone to ensure accuracy and alignment with expectations.
- Provide daily progress updates to clients, including photos and status reports, to keep them informed on the build process.
- Maintain proactive, clear, and timely communication with clients, addressing questions and concerns and setting realistic expectations about timelines and milestones.
- Walk clients through the building process step by step, explaining what to expect at each stage and helping them feel confident and supported.
- Collaborate with internal teams such as construction, design, and selections coordination to ensure client choices are implemented accurately.
- Keep detailed records of client interactions, selections, approvals, and updates to support smooth project execution.
- Demonstrate strong customer service and people skills when interacting with clients, vendors, and colleagues.
- Represent the company professionally at all times, reinforcing a positive, client-focused experience.
Essential Skills
- Proven customer service orientation with a strong focus on client satisfaction and relationship building.
- Experience in sales, preferably in a consultative or relationship-based environment.
- Knowledge of residential construction processes or the ability to quickly learn the stages of homebuilding.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex information in a clear and friendly manner.
- Excellent people skills with the ability to build rapport and trust with a wide range of clients.
- Ability to take complete ownership of the client experience from initial meeting through final sign-off.
- Confidence in guiding clients through selections such as flooring, countertops, cabinets, and other finishes.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple clients, selections, and checkpoints simultaneously.
- Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in selections, documentation, and client approvals.
- Comfort with sending daily updates and photos, and maintaining consistent communication with clients.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background in design, interior design, or a related field.
- Experience as a selection coordinator or in a similar role within residential construction or homebuilding.
- Previous experience working closely with homebuyers or homeowners on design and finish selections.
- Ability to interpret floor plans, covenants, and other construction-related documents.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle changes or client requests calmly and professionally.

Work Environment

The atmosphere supports frequent client meetings, collaborative discussions about design selections, and ongoing coordination with construction and design teams.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sioux Falls, SD.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
