Job description

Tool Install Cost Engineer

The Tool Install Cost Engineer supports cost management and project controls for equipment installation projects in a complex advanced manufacturing environment. This role focuses on reviewing and validating costs related to mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and process utility modifications required for tool installations, ensuring that all cost impacts are accurately captured, analyzed, and reflected in project forecasts and financial reporting. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with engineering, construction, project controls, procurement, and contractor teams while solving complex construction and cost challenges in a fast-paced, highly technical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Review and validate contractor pricing using established unit-rate agreements to ensure accuracy and compliance with project standards.
  • Evaluate change requests related to tool installation activities and assess the associated cost impacts on overall project budgets and forecasts.
  • Analyze field-driven scope changes and confirm that all related costs are properly captured, documented, and incorporated into project financials.
  • Support forecasting, budgeting, and cost trending activities throughout project execution to maintain reliable and up-to-date financial projections.
  • Track project commitments, expenditures, accruals, and forecasted costs to provide clear visibility into financial performance and obligations.
  • Partner closely with engineering, construction, procurement, and project controls teams to understand installation requirements and their cost implications.
  • Review contractor invoices, payment applications, and supporting documentation to verify accuracy and alignment with contractual agreements.
  • Identify potential commercial risks, scope gaps, and cost variances, and communicate findings to stakeholders with recommended mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and maintain project cost reports, dashboards, and executive summaries that clearly present financial status to project leadership.
  • Support schedule-driven cost analysis and cash flow forecasting to align financial planning with project timelines and milestones.
  • Provide recommendations regarding cost exposure, contingency utilization, and forecast adjustments to support informed decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate project financial records and reporting throughout the construction lifecycle, ensuring data integrity and audit readiness.
  • Evaluate cost impacts related to mechanical equipment connections, HVAC modifications, chilled water and process cooling systems, and process piping systems.
  • Assess cost implications of utility distribution infrastructure, electrical power and distribution systems, conduit and cable routing, and plumbing systems.
  • Consider structural support modifications, facility penetrations, restoration activities, and multi-trade coordination impacts in overall cost evaluations.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of experience in cost engineering, project controls, cost management, estimating, quantity surveying, or construction financial analysis.
  • Strong understanding of MEP systems, process utilities, and industrial construction practices.
  • Proven experience reviewing contractor pricing, change orders, and construction cost documentation.
  • Experience supporting large capital construction projects in a complex environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and cost management software for data analysis and reporting.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and evaluate complex cost and scope information.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and present financial insights clearly.
  • Solid problem-solving abilities to address construction and cost challenges in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents to understand scope and cost impacts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting advanced manufacturing, industrial, mission-critical, pharmaceutical, or technology-focused construction projects.
  • Experience in mechanical, electrical, or industrial construction, particularly related to equipment installation and process utilities.
  • Experience with project forecasting, earned value management, or broader project controls methodologies.
  • Familiarity with process utility systems and equipment installation projects in highly technical facilities.
  • Experience working within complex, highly technical construction environments that require multi-trade coordination.
  • Interest in and openness to learning IPD (Integrated Project Delivery) and lean construction methodologies and tools.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development, supported by access to continuous education platforms.

Work Environment

The role operates primarily in a remote work environment, with periodic travel to project sites as required; travel costs are covered by the company. You will support equipment installation projects within advanced manufacturing facilities, working with multidisciplinary teams in a highly technical construction setting. The position is structured as a salaried role with approximately 40-hour workweeks and an emphasis on work-life balance, including paid time off for vacation, holidays, and sick leave. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package with medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k) plan, and access to ongoing education through an online learning platform. Team members can also take advantage of a discount program and a structured review process that supports professional growth. The company culture combines the feel of a local, progressive consulting firm with the resources and project opportunities of a larger organization, and provides exposure to IPD and lean construction methodologies on significant projects around the country.
