Mammography Technologist and Breast Sonographer

Job Description The Mammography Technologist and Breast Sonographer is responsible for performing screening and diagnostic mammography exams, breast ultrasounds, and biopsies and procedures on patients using specialized equipment. This position works closely with radiologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate and high-quality imaging results. This is a “hybrid” role used in areas where both mammography and sonography are required to provide patient care and requires a strong understanding of imaging techniques in both modalities, excellent patient care skills, and the ability to work in a fast‑paced environment. Essential Functions Maintains American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or modality‑specific competency in all clinical and technical functions. Ensures proper patient identification, order verification, and prepares the patient for the exam. Performs radiologic breast imaging exams per department protocol, including breast ultrasound and advanced mammography procedures such as stereotactic biopsies, ultrasound core biopsies, clip placements, drainages, etc. Demonstrates positioning competency. Operates mammography and ultrasound equipment with skill to identify and record anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information, ensuring high quality images are produced. Adheres to radiation safety guidelines and maintains a safe working environment. Provides appropriate patient education, ensures patient comfort, and addresses concerns. Practices appropriate infection control and sterile techniques. Thoroughly and accurately completes all required documentation, records patient information, procedures performed, and any adverse reactions. Follows protocols, coding, charging, consents, QC programs, and reports equipment failures. American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Mammography certification. Rad Tech license in state of practice, if applicable. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers. Demonstrated experience and proficiency in mammography and breast ultrasound. Preferred Qualifications ARRT Breast Ultrasound or ARDMS Sonography or ARDMS Sonography certification. Three years of experience working in mammography and breast ultrasound. Physical Requirements Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interaction with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring verbal communication and hearing. Manual dexterity required to manipulate complex equipment with precision and accuracy; frequent computer use and typing for documentation. Ability to lift, transfer, and move patients; bend, lift, and carry items up to and including heavy items. Walk and transport patients and equipment, including heavy items and use of gurneys. Stand for extended periods of time. Drive a vehicle may be required for certain roles. Location and Hours Intermountain Health St. Vincent Regional Hospital, Billings, MT. Part‑time: 20 hours per week, Monday & Friday 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Cross‑training in bone density as required. Salary Hourly range: $35.60 – $54.93, based on experience.
