Athletic Director

Reports To: Building Principal
Supervises: Non-licensed staff in the Athletics including Assistant Athletic Directors, coaches, trainers, and support personnel

Position Objective: To provide maximum participation for students in interscholastic athletics using the safest and most effective coaching and training methods. To oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive high school athletic program

Minimum Qualifications: Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with the administrative endorsement Administrative experience in Athletics Experience in athletics (as Varsity Head Coach) at the university or high school level Experience working successfully in a diverse, multicultural environment.

Required Skills: Ability to motivate student athletes and coaches Ability to read, interpret, and explain materials from Board policy, administrative procedures, professional journals, and legal documents, including Illinois School Code Good verbal and written communication skills Demonstrated leadership ability to work with high school students and adults Ability to interpret and analyze data, and produce high-quality presentations and documents Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a variety of audiences Ability to maintain and grow current job skills Ability to lead all phases of instructional programs Ability to access and utilize technology to maximize other skills and performance Ability to make rational decisions, problem-solve, and effectuate change in accordance with established policies and procedures Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and stakeholders Ability to manage fiscal, physical, and human resources to successfully carry out the functions and programs of the office Ability to deal with difficult situations courteously and tactfully and maintain composure to keep a respectful environment for students and staff Ability to maintain confidentiality Strong work ethic and aptitude as a self-starter who requires minimal supervision

Performance Responsibilities: Administers the Extra-Curricular Athletic Programs Maintains files and records required by policy, regulation, law and good practice. Responds to requests for information. Implements board policies and advises the administration on legal matters related to athletics. Assesses department needs through consultation with students, staff, parents and develops policy recommendations for the Board's consideration and action. Evaluates the extra-curricular athletic programs and engages in long-range planning. Develops and updates brochures, handbooks, and policy manuals. Conducts research related to athletic programs. Keeps the school community informed about the extracurricular athletic programs. Directs and Coordinates the Fiscal Operations Within the Departments Engages in fiscal planning-both short and long-range. Assists in preparing and implementing the school system budget and coordinates department purchasing. Recommends capital improvements and negotiated contracts and agreements. Formulates specifications to be incorporated into contracts and bids. Serves as a consultant in the selection of supplies and materials. Supervises all ticket sales and fund-raising events of the athletic program. Administers the receipt and disbursement of student activity cash funds. Conducts salary and wage surveys. Supervises and guides the fiscal planning/execution of all parent volunteer organizations supporting the high school athletic program. Creates the Schedules for All Operations and Activities Within the Departments Prepares schedules for use of facilities. Issues timely announcements of upcoming events and deadlines. Organizes and administers the overall program of extracurricular athletics, both intramural and interscholastic, for the school. Hires officials, team physicians, supervisors and police, for supervision of home contests. Arranges transportation for athletic contest participants. Verifies each athlete's eligibility for participation in each sport. Arranges all details of visiting teams' needs, as appropriate. Provides for emergency health care and first aid treatment. Arranges field, gymnasium and aquatics center practice schedules, including arrangements for summer recreation programs and non-school use of playing fields and facilities. Recommends, Manages, Supervises, and Evaluates Personnel Recruits, screens, interviews and recommends prospective coaches. Makes coaching assignment recommendations. Supervises and evaluates coaching staff and other athletic personnel. Provides opportunities for professional development for the coaching staff. Monitors personnel time records, approves attendance at professional meetings. Investigates complaints regarding employee conduct or performance. Encourages the development and use of new strategies and philosophies. Provides staff leadership to promote the athletic objectives of the district. Assists coaches in the handling of day-to-day problems. Resolves staff problems and provides support to coaches. Schedules monthly meetings with all Head Coaches and weekly in-season meetings with individual Head Coaches. Coordinates the Development, Implementation, Review, and Revision of the Extra-Curricular Athletic Program Attends practices and games for purposes of evaluation and needs assessment. Attends professional conferences to keep abreast of promising instructional practices. Enforces the federal, state and board policy on equal educational opportunity. Develops and supervises an effective, comprehensive and equal opportunities athletic program for all students. Advises on modification of programs to meet individual student health needs. Investigates complaints and grievances. Participates in the work of state and national associations. Interacts with students to encourage performance at their highest level. Promotes an inclusive and welcoming athletic culture that fosters student belonging, school pride, and positive relationships among students, staff, families, and the community. Collaborates with coaches, administrators, and student leaders to ensure equitable access, meaningful participation, and social-emotional support for all student-athletes. Represents the athletic department through positive community engagement, communication, and programs that celebrate diversity, sportsmanship, and student achievement. Manages and Develops Facilities Issues repair orders and provides specifications and drawings to the maintenance/custodial department. Inspects buildings and grounds, machines and equipment and determines safety and obsolescence of equipment. Enforces compliance with occupational health and safety codes and standards. Oversees maintenance of swimming pools in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition. Recommends watering and spraying schedules for school athletic fields. Orders and oversees repairs or replacement of defective parts. Assists in the development of specifications for construction projects. Assists in identifying and using community resources for the athletic program. Supervises Departmental Activities and Operations and Evaluates the Performance of Licensed and Non-Licensed Staff Supports the professional development of staff members. Coordinates public or special events. Supervises part-time student help. Develops and places into operation appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities. Oversees the implementation of the insurance program covering school athletes. Works to resolve conflicts; anticipates and resolves potential problems. Organizes, plans and coordinates departmental awards including recognition of alumni, former coaches, and staff. Establishes a Positive Image for Departments Within the School and the Community Interacts and aides in the development of feeder programs. Plans and supervises an annual recognition program for school athletes. Keeps records of the results of school athletic contests, and maintains a record file of all award winners, stating the date and type of award, including athletic scholarships. Maintains appropriate professional relationships with parents, parent groups (e.g. Athletic Boosters), school volunteers and outside agencies. Responds to requests for information. Oversees with Summer School Athletic Programming Oversees the summer programming. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of summer school.

Terms of Employment: 260 day work calendar with irregular or extended work hours including evenings and weekends.

Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is continuously interacting with the public, staff and students. The employee frequently must meet multiple demands from several people. Occasionally the employee must use hand-grip strength to operate office equipment.

Salary Range: Target hiring range for this position will be between $160,000 to $180,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
