Job description

Established in 2005, Peace in the Home Family Services (Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation) empowers, promotes, and supports women and their families to build stronger, safer communities. Our programs address domestic violence through a comprehensive strategy of prevention and intervention, including 24/7 confidential shelter, housing services, legal support, and culturally responsive outreach. POSITION SUMMARY The Shelter Advocate provides direct care and safety oversight for residents in our 24/7 confidential shelter. In this role, you are a calm, stabilizing presence—someone who answers the crisis line, de‑escalates tense situations, enforces house guidelines with compassion, and coordinates with the clinical and case management team to ensure every resident’s needs are met. This is a PRN (on‑call) position covering weekday, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts across multiple shelter sites. Reports To: Lead House Manager FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt Employment Type: Part‑Time / PRN (On‑Call) up to 24 hours a week KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Crisis Line & Resident Safety Answer, assess, and log all incoming hotline calls promptly and professionally, following established protocols. Maintain a safe, secure environment by conducting regular facility and grounds checks. De‑escalate conflict situations using trauma‑informed techniques; intervene to protect resident safety. Coordinate with emergency services (police, EMS) and administer first aid as needed. Monitor residents’ self‑administration of medication in accordance with shelter policy. Resident Support & Program Coordination Engage residents in a supportive, empowering manner that respects their autonomy and cultural backgrounds. Administer shelter tokens and incentives in accordance with program guidelines. Oversee and facilitate resident and volunteer activities during your shift. Document all resident rule violations, incidents, and relevant observations clearly and objectively. Follow up with the Case Manager Supervisor and Case Managers to ensure client needs are addressed. Contact external agencies on behalf of residents as appropriate and necessary. Operations & Documentation Maintain an accurate, detailed daily shift log documenting shelter activities, incidents, and facility conditions. Ensure proper facility lockdown and security procedures are followed at shift close. Support operations across multiple shelter sites as assigned. Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned by the Lead House Manager. Professional Growth Participate in professional development opportunities including trainings, conferences, and team meetings. Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of shelter policies, DV best practices, and mandatory reporting requirements. QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field preferred. Minimum 6 months of experience in human services, social work, or a related field. Experience working with survivors of domestic violence, individuals experiencing homelessness, or other vulnerable populations strongly preferred. Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Arabic) is a significant plus. Trauma‑informed approach: ability to engage clients with empathy, patience, and respect. Demonstrated cultural competence and responsiveness when working with diverse populations. Strong conflict resolution skills; ability to recognize and de‑escalate tense situations calmly. Problem‑solving mindset: identifies issues early and proactively works toward resolution. Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills; accurate documentation. Reliable, dependable, and able to maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Comfort working independently during overnight and weekend shifts with minimal supervision. SCHEDULE & REQUIREMENTS This is an on‑call PRN position. Availability is required across the following shift types: Weekday day and evening shifts Weekend shifts (Saturday and Sunday) The schedules are assigned on an as‑needed basis.
