Job Description
Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.
The Wampler Library specialist will assist patrons, organize library materials and information, and perform clerical and administrative tasks as directed by the Director of Library Services. The primary duty of this position is purchasing and procurement, and managing financial reports for the Library. Assists with daily tasks of the library including working directly with students to instruct in formal and informal library and information literacy skills. Will prepare purchase requests, order supplies, and, upon delivery, processes and distributes supplies and materials throughout the library. Examines books for damage; repairs or facilitates repairs when needed. Assists in preparing exhibits, seasonal displays, art collections, and bulletin boards throughout the library. Makes ID badges for students, faculty and staff. Performs other related duties as assigned.
This position is designated as a
covered employee in a non-restricted position in accordance with Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) Policy 2.20. A non-restricted position is one that is funded by sources considered continuous or recurring, such as Educational and General Funds.
A covered employee is a salaried employee whose terms and conditions of employment are subject to the Virginia Personnel Act and who is employed in a classified position. In accordance with DHRM policies, covered employees accumulate paid leave, participate in state retirement, life insurance, and related plans, participate in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program, are eligible to participate in the state health plan and flexible benefits program, and are subject to the provisions of all DHRM policies.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Working knowledge of Library of Congress and other related library classification systems. Working knowledge of office equipment and accurate keyboarding skills necessary to manage clerical and cataloging duties.
- Ability to remain professional and courteous while interacting with library patrons. Ability to interact with students, faculty, staff, and patrons.
- Must be willing to participate in library training as directed by the Library Director.
Minimum required qualifications: - High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least two years of relevant library experience or an associate’s degree.
- Basic knowledge of cataloging or willingness to learn and apply knowledge.
Additional Considerations Two to three years of library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Operation of a State Vehicle No Supervises Employees No Required Travel Minimal.
