Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Scientist Profession: Medical Laboratory Specialty: Clinical Laboratory Scientist Duration: Full Time Shift: Days Hours per Shift: 8 hours Experience: 1 year License: High school diploma or equivalent required Certifications: Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (AMT) or equivalent certification Must-Have: Clinical Competency required within 3 months of hire and every three years Description: Under minimal supervision, applies advanced technical skills and seasoned judgment to provide a full range of sample test analyses and laboratory services independently and competently in a hospital-based laboratory. Shift work and night and weekend call are required to provide 24-hour laboratory coverage. Performs all levels of testing including CLIA defined high complexity testing. Works with patients of all ages. The work typically involves full responsibility for all technical aspects of the laboratory and includes a wide variety of duties involving diverse and complex technical problems and considerations. Assignments may involve practical, economic, or operating problems, or requests for modified procedures, test alternatives, or special studies to meet specific clinical situations. Decisions directly or indirectly affect the quality of patient care and can be critical. Writes procedures for the department using the CLSI format. Coordinates procedure manual review, updates, and distribution. Establishes a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed in the department, ensuring that acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained throughout the testing process. Resolves technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications. Ensures proper training is given to new employees during the orientation period and that regular training is provided to all technologists when there are changes. Assists the laboratory manager with evaluating the competency of testing personnel. Assists with Process Improvement activities associated with their departments. Understands and assists with implementing standards and regulations in the department. Coordinates inventory levels to maintain proper supply levels. Performs all levels of testing and laboratory services. Evaluates, judges, and interprets test results and ensures accuracy. Identifies and resolves inconsistencies in patient results and collaborates with MLTs and LSTs to troubleshoot problems. Provides specialized expertise in microbiology, transfusion medicine, molecular biology, and infectious disease safety. Performs patient specimen testing and ensures sample suitability. Provides limited test utilization and interpretation information to medical staff and refers advanced clinical questions to the Laboratory Medical Director. Maintains laboratory equipment and instruments. Ensures quality control and functionality of instruments. Reviews data charts and submits information to the Laboratory Manager. Works to ensure quality measures are met and writes policies and procedures. Prepares the laboratory for inspection from regulatory institutions. Reviews the work of MLTs and LSTs to ensure accuracy and assigns tasks. Trains new employees, staff, and laboratory students. Participates in continuing education programs. Ensures adequate inventory levels are maintained. Performs other duties as assigned or required. Knowledge of all levels of laboratory testing including CLIA defined high complexity testing is required. Knowledge of laboratory information systems operation and ability to utilize various software applications is necessary. Knowledge of laboratory equipment use and operations is essential. Knowledge of all aspects of quality control is required. Knowledge of regulatory requirements is necessary. Skills in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees and subordinates is important. Skills in oral and written communications are essential. Ability to interpret laboratory reports and quality control results for accuracy and troubleshoot problems is required. Ability to perform patient specimen testing and ensure sample suitability with a high degree of accuracy is necessary. Ability to work independently to assess the validity of lab results before release to providers is important. Ability to train staff and maintain necessary continuing education is required.
