About the position

Kane Street Kids seeks a qualified, dynamic, patient, and collaborative Education Director to lead Kane Street Kids for the remainder of the 2025–26 school year, with the opportunity to extend through 2026–27. This position is full-time, and the hours are Monday–Thursday 8 : 00am–4 : 00pm and Friday 8 : 00am–2 : 30pm.

Details

The start date for this position will be November 5, 2025. This is a 12-month position with the opportunity to take 20 personal days in the summer, when school and camp are not in session. (The initial term will be 7 months, with the opportunity to apply for the permanent position, which will start in August 2026.) Candidates do not need to be Jewish to apply, but we ask that the candidate for this position has knowledge of Jewish holidays, traditions, and values with the capability of leading staff in Jewish curriculum. Responsibilities

  • Licensure of Kane Street Kids : Take all steps necessary to ensure that Kane Street Kids remains fully licensed as a child care program under State and City laws and rules, including but not limited to compliance with Article 47 of the NYC Health Code.
  • Program and Curriculum : Establish and supervise the overall educational philosophy and curriculum in accordance with Kane Street Kids’ mission, state licensing standards, and Conservative Judaic practices, update curriculum as necessary to ensure that it promotes the highest standards of developmentally appropriate academic excellence and integrates Jewish values, organize and oversee summer and extended day programs, staffing, specialists, scheduling, and budget.
  • Jewish Education : Work with rabbinical and liturgical staff to create and implement developmentally appropriate Judaic programming in the school, including training for teachers and curriculum for students. Create opportunities for the rabbinical and liturgical staff to develop relationships with school families. Attend, participate and greet families at select services, programs and events.
  • Feedback and Student Support : Provide necessary and appropriate feedback to faculty, staff, and parents about student performance, behavior, and transition to Kindergarten or Pre-K. Identify, evaluate, and refer children and families to special needs resources, and coordinate outside services as needed for a child’s emotional, behavioral, and medical needs. Organize and work with rabbinical and liturgical staff to facilitate three annual Sunday holiday programs (Sukkot, Hanukkah, and Purim). Maintain consistent communications with parents of enrolled and prospective students through newsletters, emails, phone calls, and in-person conversation.
  • Staff Development : Maintain and refresh as necessary an orientation program for new employees, provide mentoring and in-service training through on-site workshops and ongoing professional development encouraging professional growth. Observe staff formally twice a year with formal written feedback provided. Observe the staff informally on a frequent basis to support their growth as teachers. Conduct regular staff meetings and team meetings promoting active participation and the use of quality and innovative pedagogy and curriculum.
  • Programmatic Leadership : Lead programs for preschool, infant, and toddler classes, including 2s, 3s, and Pre-K, Gentle Separation, Shabbat Jams! toddler music class, and Babies & Bagels meet-up group. Create the annual calendar, including days off for holidays and school break, parent / guardian conferences, and professional development days. Evaluate programs annually and throughout the school year to alter offerings to meet the needs of the family community.
  • Personnel : Recruit, hire, orient, supervise, train as necessary and evaluate faculty and staff. Maintain and update job descriptions for faculty and administrative staff positions. Participate in the review and revision as necessary of staff policies and personnel procedures in the Kane Street Kids Teacher Manual, the Kane Street Kids Family Handbook, and the Kane Street Synagogue Employee Handbook. Ensure that accurate records for admissions and staff are maintained and are in compliance with all requirements of DOHMH.
  • Fiscal & Compliance : Collaborate with the Finance Committee and the Synagogue administration to manage the Kane Street Kids budget and ensure that financial policies and procedures are followed, including managing fundraising events for the preschool. Communicate with the Synagogue administration and Finance Committee regarding any issues that would affect meeting financial goals. Cooperate with the Kane Street Synagogue administration and the Kane Street Board of Trustees on any fundraising activities. Maintain compliance with all DOHMH mandated staff qualifications, safety, curriculum, and sanitary policies and procedures for students, teachers and physical plant.
  • Admissions and Community Engagement : Oversee the application, touring, admissions, and registration processes to achieve full enrollment. Meet with prospective parents and maintain a marketing program to promote Kane Street Kids in the Synagogue and the local community.
  • Committees and Meetings : Attend regular meetings with the Kane Street Kids Parent Committee, as required by the President. Report to the Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee on an as-needed basis. Work with the Directors of Education and Family Programming to encourage the transition from Kane Street Kids to the Synagogue Hebrew School. Meet regularly with Engagement staff to identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • Compliance and Training : Complete online training in health and safety and other topics, consent to a background check and fingerprinting through the DOHMH, and submit a completed health form and other paperwork for their files. Files must be complete before you may begin working in the school.

Qualifications

Required :

  • Masters degree in Early Childhood Education required.
  • NYS Early Childhood Teaching Certification required.
  • Familiarity with Article 47.
  • 5-7 years formal early childhood teaching experience, preferably in infant, toddler, and / or preschool.
  • 1-3 years supervision experience.
  • Expertise in early childhood development, with a background in emergent curriculum a plus.
  • Knowledge of Judaism, particularly holidays and Jewish values.
  • Experience working with children with special needs.
  • Familiarity with developmentally-appropriate identity-based studies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Adept at organizing and creating systems for project management.
  • Punctuality and reliability.
  • Experience collaborating and communicating with families of young children.
  • Kind, loving, patient demeanor with children ages 0–5.
  • Preferred :

  • 7+ years formal early childhood teaching experience, preferably in infant, toddler, and / or preschool classrooms.
  • Expertise in Judaic studies for young children, including songs, prayers, and rituals.
  • Experience with managing a non-profit budget and collaborating with a board of directors.
  • Background in admissions or enrollment.
  • Compensation

    The annual compensation for this position ranges from $98,000 to $106,000. Total compensation is based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, performance, any contractual agreements, and organizational needs.
