Job description

Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant

Assist in planning and providing indirect/direct therapy to all students with physical disabilities. Assist in assessing students and providing therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with students' ability to derive full benefit from the educational program.

Educational Qualifications

  • An Associate degree from an accredited physical therapist assistant program
  • A valid license issued by the Texas State board of Physical Therapy Examiners

Major Responsibilities and Duties

1. Fosters the student's independence and sense of self-worth.

2. Aid in the students understanding of individual differences.

3. Promotes a better understanding of the abilities and limitations of special students by a staff and other students.

4. Assists in determining the need and availability of special equipment and materials as required by each student.

5. Helps adapt necessary equipment to the needs of each individual student.

6. Implements therapeutic procedures as designed by the supervising Physical Therapist.

7. Contributes to progress reports and helps collect data for Individualized Education Plans and Evaluations.

8. Maintains current records in accordance with school, state, and federal policy.

9. Assists with keeping accurate records of the therapy inventory and equipment.

10. Assists with establishing goals for students and developing individual therapy activities.

11. Assists dissemination of established therapeutic programs to the educational staff.

12. Consults with the supervising therapist concerning implementation and status of therapy goals (positioning, equipment, etc.).

13. Modifies, and maintains adaptive equipment for positioning, ADL for classroom use.

14. Assists in monitoring school environments for accessibility.

15. Helps ensure the proper and safe use of equipment, making certain that equipment is maintained in good working order.

16. Helps develop and awareness of individual student needs and assists the Physical Therapist in monitoring these needs.

17. Assists with instructing the educational staff concerning use of adaptive equipment, positioning programs, and integration of therapy goals into classroom and academic activities to enhance function and independence.

18. Assures that proper positioning and handling techniques are carried out correctly across all environments.

19. Attends all ARD meetings which concern physical therapy.

20. Works with others in a positive and constructive way.

21. Complies in a timely manner with all of the school agency's requirements regarding reports.

22. Complies with all state rules and regulations and master contract agreement.

23. Encourages improved student behavior that enhances opportunities for learning.

24. Improves leadership skills by attending conferences and participating in training programs.

25. Uses information and insights gained in professional training programs for self-improvement.

26. Is aware of school/community needs and acts to meet those identified needs.

27. Promotes community and parent involvement in the school district.

28. Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular business hours to confer with district personnel.

29. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job responsibility unless instructed to work from home by supervisor.

30. Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.

Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant (continued)

Distance Learning and Virtual Instruction Duties and Responsibilities In the event of a school closure in response to a disaster, flood, extreme weather condition, fuel curtailment, epidemic, pandemic or other calamity, the following duties and responsibilities will be added to the above listed Major Job Responsibilities and Duties, as directed by the Superintendent.

31. Usage of personal equipment, including but not limited to personal cellular phone, personal computer, and personal internet service when working from home during a District closure due to government or Board order or during an emergency affecting normal District operations.

32. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by supervisor. All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives.

Working Conditions

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); ability to instruct; maintain emotional control under stress.

Regular district wide travel; heavy lifting and moderate carrying. Ability to administer manual exercises and physical therapy treatments. Lifting requirements to transfer students to and from wheelchairs; biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases. Some bending, lifting and stooping while performing job related functions.

Distance Learning Working Conditions

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer; use of and access to phone system; video/instructional equipment; and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting

Motion: Repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists

Environment: Work from inside home or location other than school building

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours.

Wage / Hour Status: Non Exempt

Minimum Salary: $40,512

Pay Grade: 7

Minimum Work Days: 211

Months / Hours per Day: 11 / 8
