Interpreter / Cultural Mediator- 40 hrs

Overview

The Interpreter / Cultural Mediator provides Spanish / English interpretation between patients / families and hospital service providers. This position coordinates the system of interpretation requests, arranges coverage of those requests and maintains data on interpretation needs. The Interpreter / Cultural Mediator assists hospital staff to develop cultural competency in working with Latino populations.

Responsibilities

• Spanish speaking patients and families and hospital providers.
• Conduct patient / family interactions with respect for differing culture, beliefs and levels of understanding.
• Maintain efficient and accurate system of logging and filling requests for interpretation for all Spanish speaking only patients.
• Monitor written translation needs and verbal interpretation needs to develop effective ways to meet those needs.
• Provide accurate written translation for all documents translated to Spanish.
• Identify opportunities to improve patient care and maintain quality improvement data.
• Assist hospital providers with their understanding and respect for cultural differences through informal and formal training.
• Mediate cultural issues for staff and families.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients / families.
• Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC STANDARDS.
