Job description

Join The E3 Team

When you join the E3 team, you will be working on some of the most important energy issues with some of the top minds in the electricity industry. We help shape energy and climate policy, play vital roles in regulatory proceedings, advise executives, and inform investment and planning selections. At E3, you will be challenged and inspired.

Founded in 1989, Energy + Environmental Economics (E3) is a fast-growing energy consulting firm that helps utilities, regulators, policy makers, developers, and investors make the most educated strategic decisions possible as they implement new public policies, deploy and develop new technologies, and address customers' shifting expectations. We have offices in San Francisco, New York City, Boston, Denver, and Calgary.

Because E3 works with customers from all sectors of the electricity industry, we provide a 360-degree knowledge of markets, planning, policy, regulation, and environmental factors. Just as important, we are driven to deliver clear, unbiased evaluations that help customers make informed decisions.

E3 works on high-profile, high-impact projects in jurisdictions that spearhead the implementation of clean energy policy. In California, Hawaii, and New York, we are advising state agencies and regulators about how to implement clean energy policies with an emphasis on customer incentives and markets.

We look for people who combine strong analytical dexterity and/or policy experience with integrity with a commitment to the clean energy transition. Our Analysts love to examine, research, and offer creative solutions to some of the most elaborate and important energy issues. We are seeking qualified candidates who bring curiosity, thrive in a rigorous and quantitative solution-finding environment, take a proactive approach to assist the team, and are practiced at clearly presenting information to a variety of stakeholders. Successful applicants will also have proven organizational techniques that help you create and actualize work plans that are efficient while delivering an elevated level of guidance to serve our customers.

The Analyst is a vital contributor to our team. Any team member may play a significant role in a project, and recent graduates work alongside senior partners. The position conducts research and evaluation to aid the delivery of customer work under the direction of senior-level team members. You will have the opportunity to immediately assist project work to inform customer strategies by contributing to in-house forecasting models, quantifying various market strategies, studying market portfolios and stakeholder needs, benchmarking industry standards, and developing policy and market overviews.

Hybrid and flexible work environment that adapts to changing needs of projects. E3 thrives in a strong collaborative office-based working environment but has also adapted to the safety requirements of our employees. Must be able to work for extended hours in front of a computer screen and conduct meetings on the telephone and virtually.

Hours: Full Time

Type: Non-Exempt

Travel: 0-5%

Office Location: San Francisco, Boston, New York, or Calgary

Typical Responsibilities

  • Assist the delivery of customer work through modeling, developing presentations, writing, and preparing reports and papers, and helping with additional customer requests
  • Conduct research using your ingenuity and curiosity to make reasonable assumptions and produce appropriate solutions, at times with incomplete information. This may include country-level energy market research, delving into standards documents to find specific references or proof points, as well as research on complicated topics such as regulatory proceedings.
  • Translate results of research, reports, and insights into clear visual representations
  • Aid project heads in the creation or editing of spreadsheets to be "client-ready," including developing tools for stakeholder products
  • Simple modifications to existing tools and models
  • Proactively track actual performance of own work performed against the established plan, with ongoing communication with the Director or Manager
  • Capture project learnings and repeatable products and work samples for future use according to knowledge management processes
  • Assist with internal initiatives as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher with a strong academic record in engineering, economics, computer science, public policy, or related field
  • 0-2 years of prior experience desired specifically addressing energy and climate change issues and/or demonstrated academic related project work
  • Hands-on experience, academic project work, or knowledge base related to Energy Planning and Policy, Transmission, Pricing and Risk, and/or Market Advisory and Valuation.
  • You work collaboratively and assist each member of your team to do their greatest work, aware that each brings different experiences to the table
  • High fluency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Desire to work in a dynamic office environment with other staff

Things that Set You Apart

  • Programming experience in Python
  • You believe it is essential to achieve a transition to a low-carbon economy and love thinking about the future of energy.
  • You enjoy translating technical concepts to a broader audience.
  • You take ownership of your work, actively seeking out answers to questions and enjoy finding creative solutions to issues you encounter.
