Special Education Bus AssistantPosition: Special Education Bus AssistantLocation: Transportation Department - Westlake City School DistrictWork Schedule: anticipated to be at least 4 hours per day, 5 days per week, 9 months per yearSalary Range: $17.61 to $25.40 per hourAt four hours per day, this position is eligible for single level insurance benefits.Applications will be considered complete when submitted online via Frontline Recruiting & Hiring, formerly applitrack, with an updated resume and letter of interest.WESTLAKE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICTJOB DESCRIPTIONTitle: BUS AIDE File 102Reports to: Director of Transportation and assigned Bus Driver.Job Objective: Monitors/assists students to ensure safe, efficient and courteous transportation services.Minimum · High school diploma.Qualifications: · Student assistance skills substantiated by training and work experience. Knowledge and advanced skills serving individuals with disabilities in a school setting is advantageous. Duties may require agility, strength, and stamina to address behavioral, health and personal care needs of students.Complies with drug-free workplace rules, board policies and administrative guidelines/procedures.Demonstrates a working knowledge of bus equipment and the ability to operate a wheelchair lift.Demonstrates dependability/flexibility. Reacts to interruptions/emerging priorities effectively.Demonstrates respect/concern. Maintains patience/composure with students and families.Demonstrates the ability to work with a wide range of student (i.e., age, mental/physical skill, etc.).Embodies high ethical standards/integrity. Accepts personal responsibility for decisions/conduct.Exhibits consistent, impartial and resourceful critical-thinking skills.Maintains a record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.Meets all mandated health screening requirements.Respects privacy and maintains the confidentiality of privileged information. NOTE: Position may require successful completion of communicable disease, child abuse/neglect, CPR, and/or first aid, physical crisis intervention training as a condition of employment.Essential Assists with the transportation of student under the direction of the bus/van driver.Functions: · Works effectively with limited supervision. Performs tasks efficiently to meet deadlines.Assists with passenger loading/unloading. Secures special equipment that belongs to students. NOTE: On vehicles with a wheelchair lift – the Driver and Aide work as a team to coordinate all safety measures. Safety is the top priority even if delays disrupt the bus schedule.Learns proper procedures to assist students during emergency bus evacuations and how to operate fire/safety equipment. Documents all injuries that require treatment.Communicates bus rules to students. Keeps school personnel informed about behavior problems.Learns about individual students needs from available resources (e.g., staff, parent/guardian, etc.).For vehicles with specialized equipment; checks/fastens seat belts and secures wheelchairs or other assistance/mobility equipment before the bus starts. Reports unsafe or defective equipment.Responds to student requests for assistance. Provides help as needed when aware of passengers with medical/health considerations.Cleans up spills and deals with other conditions that may contribute to an accident.General Exemplifies professionalism and fosters goodwill to enhance the district's public image.Duties: · Contributes to an effective and positive work/learning environment. Maintains high expectations for appropriate student behavior.Intervenes to prevent/stop bullying and inappropriate student behavior.Reports suspected child abuse or neglect to civil authorities as required by law.Watches for situations that may indicate a problem. Helps manage/eliminate risks.Works with staff/students to address equipment safety/security issues.Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.Assists with unexpected/urgent situations as needed.Helps implement workplace initiatives that advance district goals.Working Safety is essential to job performance. Employees must exercise caution and comply with standard safety regulations and district procedures when involved in the following situations:Balancing, bending, climbing, crouching, kneeling, reaching, or prolonged standing.Exposure to adverse weather conditions and temperature extremes.Exposure to air-borne particulates, chemical irritants, combustible materials, electrical hazards, equipment vibrations, loud sounds and odors. Exposure to wet and/or slippery surfaces.Exposure to blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases.Interacting with aggressive, disruptive and/or unruly individuals.Lifting, carrying and moving work-related supplies/equipment.Operating and/or riding in a vehicle.
