Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant performs and assists with a variety of basic inmate care activities under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse or higher in the medical department. The entry level compensation for this position is $32,912.40.

The successful applicant should be able to perform ALL of the following functions at a pace and level or performance consistent with the actual job performance requirements. Conduct peripheral venipuncture to collect blood samples from inmate/patient and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis. Administer medications via subcutaneous and intramuscular routes, as directed by the licensed nurse and according to state scope of practice guidelines. Assist nurses with EKG's and other diagnostic tests and clinical procedures in accordance with level of training and health services policies and procedures. Assess patients and implement advanced medical treatment. Attend sick call with the physician to see inmates/patients; prepare a list of inmates/patients to be examined; prepare examining room and equipment. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and obstructed airway techniques. Dress and bandage wounds; immobilize bone and joint injuries; and apply pneumatic anti-shock trousers. Monitor, record and report vital signs and patient's condition as needed; contact doctors, supervisors, hospitals, etc. by phone or radio. Utilize emergency medical techniques to move, lift, carry and convey patients out of housing and other areas and into emergency vehicle. Control and inventory medication, syringes and other medical supplies or equipment as required by established procedures. Keep equipment and work area clean; utilize appropriate sanitation methods. Document and report activities in accordance with established policies and/or procedures including medical file documentation. Maintain absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. Closely monitor all potential catastrophic illnesses. Observe and record inmate/patient's behavior. Inspect the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmates/patients; securely store supplies and equipment or ensure their safe disposal. Prepare and maintain a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary and/or operational records, reports and logs, using appropriate grammar, to include filing, alphabetizing and labeling; review reports and records produced on the shifts; properly processes all reports and documents in a timely manner. Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required by policy; take appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies. Communicate effectively and coherently to administration, staff, inmates/residents, visitors and the general public, particularly in situations requiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness and good judgment. This includes giving information, instructions and directions, mediating disputes and providing reliable testimony, in court and other formal settings. Review, process and respond (via corporate counsel) to lawsuits; attend court hearings, when necessary; conduct research of charts; review status of inmates/patients with serious health problems for completion of all necessary intervention and treatment. Read, analyze, comprehend and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents, including the processing of such documents as medical instructions, commitment orders, summons and other legal writs. Facilitate, where applicable, NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of organizational efficiency and approved, appropriate medical services. Escort inmates or coordinate the movement of inmates to and from different areas for medical treatment. Initiate and complete investigations and inquiries with accuracy by gathering information and evidence, interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects and confidential informers. Reliably and repetitively identify inmates by visual means. Perform searches of people, objects capable of concealing contraband, buildings and outdoor areas which will involve detecting and identifying objects and detaining people. Engage in functions in confined areas that include such things as working rotating shifts and physically checking the doors, windows and other areas to verify they are secure. Endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of inmates and others encountered in an antagonistic environment. Take appropriate action to prevent or diffuse potentially disruptive situations. Inspect unclothed inmates/patients including body cavities, with possible exposure to body fluids, wastes and possible encounter with deceased or contagious persons. Endeavor to comply with the requirements of applicable regulations, laws, rules, procedures, policies, standards and/or contract. Establish and maintain effective working relations with others and handle difficult interpersonal contacts. Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Interpret an extensive variety of medical and technical instructions in the form of handwritten text, correspondence, policies, regulations, procedures, reports, directions for forms completion and other simple or complex documents. Remain alert at all times and react quickly, efficiently and calmly in emergency and other high stress situations. These are illustrative duties. Must be certified as a Medical Assistant in the state of Florida. Have high school diploma, GED certification or equivalent or greater. A valid driver's license is required.

Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction). Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid). Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, bilingual preferred. Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to climb multiple flights of stairs daily. Ability to open and close heavy security doors.
