We'll Prepare You for the Job No prior correctional experience is required. New Correction Officers receive comprehensive, paid training through the Connecticut Dept. of Correction Training Academy. Training combines classroom instruction with hands‑on, practical preparation for working in a correctional environment. You will develop skills in communication, decision making, safety, security, teamwork, and working effectively with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Correction Officers have multiple pathways for advancement, including roles in specialized units (K9, Tactical, Counselor roles, Training, Policy Development), as well as promotional tracks leading to Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Warden and Warden. Salary This is an hourly position; Starting pay: $26.83 per hour ($1,944.83 biweekly, annualized to $50,760) After completion of initial training (10 weeks): $29.81 per hour ($2,160.92 biweekly, annualized to $56,400); Additional compensation opportunities are available through overtime, shift differentials, and meal stipends. Position Highlights Schedule: Correction Officers work a base schedule of 36.25 hours per week on a rotating basis (5 days on, 3 days off rotating shift). May be required to work additional mandatory overtime hours. In order to apply to this position, you must be able to work second or third shift and be willing to be held over for additional hours based on facility need; Facility Assignments : Candidates will not be able to select which facility they would like to work at: assignments are solely at the discretion and based on the needs of the agency; Hazardous duty position; Paid time off with holidays, vacation, personal leave, and sick leave; Professional training and development opportunities; Retirement savings plans, including: hazardous duty benefits, 401(k) and a 457(b) deferred compensation plan options; Professional uniforms provided annually; Free on-site parking at each facility. Components Of Interview Process Candidates will complete a writing sample. Candidates will have an opportunity to sit with custody staff to review all documentation submitted. Candidates will attend their oral interview. Background Investigation: Selected candidates will undergo a comprehensive background investigation, which includes reviewing employment history, military service, education, training, criminal records, and motor vehicle history. This investigation ensures that candidates meet the high standards of character and integrity required to be a Correction Officer. Medical Evaluation: Candidates who successfully complete the previous stages will undergo a comprehensive medical examination, including screening of illegal drugs. This evaluation ensures that candidates are in good health and physically fit to perform the duties of a Correction Officer. Correction Officer Training Academy The Correction Officer Training Program is a crucial component of preparing new Correction Officers for their roles within the Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC). The training program is designed to provide comprehensive instruction and hands‑on experience to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Correction Officer effectively and safely. This is a paid training. Key Aspects Of The Correction Officer Training Program Include Duration: The training program typically spans fourteen (14) weeks, of which new appointees are referred to as "Correction Officer Cadets for the first ten (10) weeks of training". This duration may vary slightly depending on specific facility needs and program adjustments. Location: The training is conducted at designated training facilities.
