Engineering Project Manager
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Project Manager for a full-time opportunity with our client in Merrillville, IN. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background and experience managing projects within heavy industrial facilities, with experience in primary steel, aluminum production, metals processing, or similar heavy manufacturing environments strongly preferred.
This position will be responsible for managing engineering projects from initial scope development and proposal through design, construction support, and project completion. The Engineering Project Manager will coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams, manage client relationships, and ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with technical requirements.
Responsibilities
- Manage heavy industrial engineering projects throughout the complete project lifecycle.
- Develop project scopes, proposals, budgets, schedules, staffing plans, and technical deliverables.
- Serve as the primary point of contact between clients, engineering teams, vendors, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities involving mechanical, structural, electrical, controls, and other disciplines.
- Manage project budgets, engineering hours, schedules, changes, and overall project performance.
- Lead project kickoff meetings, design reviews, progress meetings, and client coordination meetings.
- Perform and coordinate field investigations to document existing equipment, systems, and facility conditions.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, equipment layouts, and technical documentation.
- Provide technical direction and support to engineers and designers throughout project execution.
- Identify project risks, technical issues, and potential schedule or cost impacts and develop appropriate solutions.
- Manage equipment modifications, facility upgrades, and new installations within operating industrial facilities.
- Coordinate engineering activities associated with process equipment, piping, hydraulics, HVAC, utilities, and supporting infrastructure.
- Ensure engineering deliverables comply with client standards, project requirements, applicable codes, and governmental regulations.
- Manage project changes and communicate impacts to scope, schedule, and budget.
- Support procurement, vendor coordination, construction activities, installation, startup, and commissioning as required.
- Maintain strong client relationships and identify opportunities for additional project support.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 7+ years of engineering experience, including project management or project leadership responsibilities.
- Strong experience working within heavy industrial facilities.
- Experience with primary steel, aluminum, metals processing, foundry, die casting, or similar manufacturing operations strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage engineering projects from proposal through completion.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering and design teams.
- Strong understanding of mechanical equipment, industrial piping, hydraulic systems, utilities, and facility infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of engineering drawings, equipment layouts, P&IDs, schematics, and fabrication drawings.
- Familiarity with ASME, AWS, NFPA, and other industrial codes and standards.
- Ability to develop and manage project budgets, schedules, scopes of work, and engineering hours.
- Experience coordinating engineering activities with construction contractors, equipment vendors, and plant personnel.
- Strong technical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with technical teams, plant personnel, and client management.
- Ability to perform field investigations within active industrial facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing capital improvement, equipment replacement, facility modernization, or process improvement projects.
- Background in mechanical engineering or mechanical design.
- Experience with industrial process piping, hydraulic systems, HVAC, and rotating equipment.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and engineering/design software.
- Experience supporting construction, equipment installation, startup, and commissioning.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or PMP certification is a plus but not required.
