The Opportunity
SNAM Communications is hiring Underground Construction Technicians to support horizontal directional drilling and underground telecommunications infrastructure projects throughout Utah.
This is a hands-on outdoor construction role for dependable people who are comfortable working hard, working safely, and supporting a crew in changing field conditions. Previous underground utility experience is helpful, but it is not required for every candidate. Strong candidates may come from landscaping, excavation, roadwork, utility construction, or other physically demanding outdoor trades.
Candidates with mini-excavator, hydro-vac, potholing, or underground utility experience may qualify for the higher end of the pay range.
What You’ll Do
- Support HDD crews with potholing, excavation, handhole installation, backfill, cleanup, and general underground construction work.
- Use hydro-vac and high-pressure water equipment to expose underground utilities safely.
- Dig and expose utilities at locations identified through 811 markings before drilling begins.
- Assist with installing handholes, flower pots, conduit infrastructure, and related underground components.
- Perform physical digging and shovel work when mechanical excavation is not appropriate.
- Operate or assist with mini excavators and other equipment when qualified.
- Help the crew stay ahead of drilling operations so production is not delayed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company and project safety procedures.
- Work closely with the entire crew and understand that one person’s actions can affect the productivity and safety of everyone on the project.
- Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, dirt, mud, and changing weather conditions.
- Travel to project locations throughout Utah as needed.
What We’re Looking For
- Dependable and willing to perform physically demanding outdoor work.
- Strong safety mindset.
- Team-oriented attitude.
- Comfortable working around heavy equipment and active construction operations.
- Able to perform repeated digging, lifting, carrying, and manual labor throughout the workday.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States and able to complete required employment verification.
- Willing and able to travel to project sites.
Preferred Experience
- Underground utilities or telecommunications construction.
- Hydro-vac or vacuum excavation.
- Potholing and utility exposure.
- Mini excavator operation.
- Landscaping, excavation, road construction, or similar outdoor labor.
- Familiarity with 811 markings.

- Weekly pay.
- Overtime opportunities.

- Access to safety and equipment training.
- Company vehicle access when required by the position.
- Tool support/replacement program.
What Success Looks Like
Successful team members are reliable, safety-conscious, physically capable, and willing to do whatever is needed to keep the HDD crew productive. You do not need to know every aspect of directional drilling on day one, but you must be willing to learn, work hard, and contribute to the team.
