Position Overview
The State of Ohio DRC is seeking a Database Administrator 3 (DBA3) with 5+ years of hands-on enterprise Microsoft SQL Server experience across on-premises and Azure environments. The DBA3 will be responsible for database administration, performance tuning, backup/recovery, HA/DR, security, Azure database platforms, automation, and developer support.
Required Skills
- 5+ years of hands-on experience managing enterprise-level Microsoft SQL Server environments.
- Strong experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and database internals.
- Advanced T-SQL skills.
- Performance monitoring and tuning, including indexing, query optimization, blocking, and deadlock resolution.
- Backup, recovery, High Availability (HA), and Disaster Recovery (DR).
- Experience with Always On Availability Groups, Log Shipping, Failover Cluster Instances, or Replication.
- Strong Security & Compliance experience, including RBAC, database permissions, encryption, and access management.
- Experience supporting Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs.
- Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Key Vault, Azure Backup, and Azure RBAC.
- Experience migrating and integrating databases between on-premises SQL Server and Azure.
- Experience with SSIS/ETL workflows.
- Strong developer support and code review experience involving stored procedures, triggers, functions, and complex T-SQL.
- Scripting experience with T-SQL, PowerShell, or command-line tools.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and maintain SQL Server instances across production, staging, and development environments.
- Monitor and optimize database performance, system health, and resource utilization.
- Design, implement, and test backup, recovery, HA, and DR solutions.
- Administer Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs.
- Configure Azure database backup, monitoring, security, migration, and disaster recovery solutions.
- Use Azure Monitor and Log Analytics for database monitoring and troubleshooting.
- Manage database security, RBAC, permissions, encryption, and sensitive credentials using Azure Key Vault.
- Support developers with schema design, table structures, data types, stored procedures, triggers, functions, and complex queries.
- Develop automation scripts for index maintenance, integrity checks, statistics updates, backups, monitoring, and reporting.
- Provide Tier III technical support for critical database issues.
- Develop database strategies and contribute to solution architecture and business-case development.
- Create and maintain technical documentation covering installation, monitoring, security, configuration, migration, and best practices.
- Mentor junior staff and provide technical guidance.
- Collaborate with IT Architecture, CIO, IT Managers, and security teams to meet agency requirements.
