Product Manager – Utilities
A variety of soft skills and experience may be required for the following role Please ensure you check the overview below carefully.
Help Shape the Future of Critical Infrastructure
At Yambay, we're helping utilities modernize and secure the systems that keep communities running. Our enterprise software powers mission-critical field operations through modern architecture, AI-driven automation, enterprise mobility, and secure solutions built for complex utility environments.
Yambay provides field-workforce software that carries advanced distribution management out of the control room and into the crews' hands — outage, switching, damage assessment, restoration. In North America we go to market through a prime channel partner, who owns the customer relationship and delivery. This role gives us our own first-hand line into utility operations alongside that channel — including the utility whose crews are working around a limitation nobody has written a requirement for yet.
We're looking for a Product Manager who knows how utility operations work, and how they differ from one utility and state to the next, with the relationships to hear it first-hand. You'll give Yambay an independent line into what utility operations are actually dealing with.
You'll collaborate across Product, Engineering, Customer Success, Sales, and Services teams in the United States and Australia balancing customer needs, market opportunities, technical possibilities, and Yambay's long-term product strategy.
In this role, you'll leverage your experience working directly with some of North America's largest utilities to understand how they operate, where technology can make a difference, and what they need from the next generation of enterprise field solutions. You'll translate those insights into clear product priorities and work closely with Engineering to bring them to life. You will take the call and talk straight to provide key input to what we build next.
If you're passionate about solving complex problems, building enterprise products customers genuinely value, and using emerging technologies to modernize critical infrastructure, we'd love to hear from you.
What You'll Do:
Own the product roadmap
- Take the goals and initiatives set by the Director of Product Management and turn them into a set of product changes, sequenced and scoped with resourcing needs, dependencies and trade-offs. Done in collaboration with partners and internal teams. Hand off cleanly for engineering.
Re-plan as reality moves
- Rate cases slip, deployments hit scheduling walls. You re-cut the plan early and deliberately, with the reasoning communicated.
Engage the industry on your own initiative
- Get into utility operations rooms outside any sales process, across utilities and states. Work existing relationships and build new ones with operations managers, control-room supervisors, outage and grid-operations leads, grid-modernization and IT/OT people. This is protected time with its own success measure.
- Turn conversations, site visits, RFP patterns and regulatory shifts into an evidenced picture of where the market is going — and draw a hard line between one customer's request and a scalable product need that holds across utilities.
Work with Customer Success and the Product Analyst teams
- Peers, not reports: they bring live account reality and evidence, you bring market truth and both shape the plan.
What You'll Own, and What You Influence
You own:
- Engagement with the electrical utilities market.
- The roadmap, and its adjustment as situations change.
- The quality of the market evidence behind product decisions.
What you Influence:
- The strategic product direction
- The technical product architecture
- Marketing - collateral, positioning, or campaigns.
What You'll Bring
We're looking for someone who combines strong product judgment with curiosity, customer empathy, and the ability to turn complex problems into practical, scalable software solutions.
Required Experience & Expertise
- Current, personal relationships with operations, control-room, outage or grid-modernization people across several large North American electric utilities — people who will take your call.
- Experience across multiple utilities and/or states — as an employee, vendor, implementer, consultant or contractor — and an understanding of how operations, regulation and field practice differ between them.
- Domain Knowledge in the field service, network operations, asset management with proven understanding of the North American electrical utilities market.
- Experience in Product Management, Product Ownership, or similar product-focused roles building enterprise software that turned into a plan that shipped: sequencing, scoping, trade-off calls, adjustment under pressure.
- Partnering with software engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.
- Ability to distinguish between individual customer requests and broader product opportunities and translate customer needs into scalable solutions.
- Experience communicating market and customer needs into product capabilities, and features that create clarity for the broader product and engineering teams.
Professional Attributes
- Genuine curiosity about how customers work - a habit of looking past the requested feature to the underlying problem.
- Strong product judgment - you balance customer needs, product objectives and technical realities, challenge assumptions, ask the difficult question and make the trade-off call.
- Enthusiasm for emerging technologies, including AI, enterprise mobility, modern security architecture, and enterprise software platforms.
- Strong communication and storytelling skills with the ability to create clarity around complex ideas.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to build trusted relationships with customers, engineers, and cross-functional teams.
- Comfort challenging assumptions, asking difficult questions, and making thoughtful product tradeoffs.
- Ownership, accountability, and the ability to move initiatives forward in an ambiguous environment.
- Adaptability and resilience in a fast-paced, evolving organization.
- A growth mindset with a passion for continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
- Ability to work collaboratively across global teams with regular overlap with Australia.
- Ability to travel as needed, including occasional international travel.
- Yambay’s technology sells to the U.S. Government and we must evaluate an applicant’s eligibility to handle export-controlled information or obtain required Government authorizations. Therefore, we will ask you as part of the application process to identify whether you are a U.S. Citizen or green card holder, or have asylum/refugee status in the U.S.
Bonus Points If You Have
- Working knowledge of ADMS/OMS and distribution field operations.
- Network model, switching and tagging, outage restoration and storm response, crew workflow, the IT/OT boundary — enough to hold a control-room conversation without an interpreter.
- Familiarity with the North American regulatory and operating environment.
- Rate-case and capital-approval cycles, SAIDI/SAIFI, wildfire-mitigation and crew-safety drivers.
- An Electrical Engineering or related technical degree, or equivalent hands-on utility-operations experience.
- Experience with Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), Workforce Management (WFM), or field service management platforms.
- Experience building enterprise mobile applications or products used by field-based workforces.
Why You'll Love Working Here
