Job Profile Summary :
A Clinical Supervisor is an experienced and licensed educator who acts as an advisor through virtual assistance, observer, and assessor of a teacher candidate providing feedback throughout the demonstration teaching experience.
The role of the Clinical Supervisor is crucial in the guidance and education of a teacher candidate. The Clinical Supervisor is Western Governors University’s (WGU) representative that liaises between the school, host teacher (HT), teacher candidate (TC) and WGU.
WGU currently uses GoReact, a secure online platform for clinical supervisors (CS) to conduct virtual observations. With 100% virtual CS support, our CSs can supervise students within and outside their state.
Job Qualifications :
To serve as a WGU Clinical Supervisor, you must meet the following qualifications :
- Hold a current teaching license in the content area of supervision
- A minimum of three years of experience in teaching K-12 and / or school administration
- A master’s degree in education or related field is required
- Experience teaching in the content area of supervision (Elementary Education and / or Special Education)
- Ability to successfully complete background clearance if requested
- Capacity to support up to three teacher candidates at a time
Essential Functions and Responsibilities :
Clinical Supervisors (CS) have the following responsibilities :
- Complete WGU CS Training which includes; CS Training, Calibration Training, and some states have state-specific training requirements.
- Always function as a WGU representative. This includes but is not limited to being a proponent of WGU and acting in a professional manner in all interactions.
- Conduct a virtual live Meet and Greet with the TC to discuss expectations before demonstration teaching (DT) begins.
- Introduce yourself to the HT and the principal either through email and / or phone prior to the first observation.
- Maintain communication with the TC, HT, and principal throughout DT.
- Conduct six formal observations 7-10 days apart. Each observation must last a minimum of 45 minutes and a maximum of 2 hours.
- Connect with the HT at the time of each observation to discuss how things are going, analyze the HT / TC relationship, and facilitate communication between the two as needed.
- Be proactive in solving problems as soon as they arise. Serve as a facilitator between the HT and TC. Communicate with the clinical seminar faculty if concerns arise.
If TC is struggling, you may be asked to administer a student support plan by working with the clinical seminar faculty and following steps provided.
- Hold pre- and post-observation conferences with TC. You must hold post-observation conferences within 48 hours of the observation.
- Submit observation and evaluation forms immediately after the post-observation conference / evaluation round table conference.
- Respond to communication from WGU staff or other stakeholders within 24-48 hours.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities :
To serve as a WGU Clinical Supervisor you will need :
- Access to a computer with webcam, email, and internet connection for corresponding with teacher candidates, WGU staff, host teachers, principals, and for completing on-line observation / evaluation forms and live virtual meetings.
- District and principal approval if a district employee.
- Technologically proficient
- Capacity to supervise three teacher candidates at a time.
