Job description

The Director of Development, Corporate and Foundation Relations (DOD - CFR) fulfills an important role in UC San Diego's development program. Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (EDOD-CFR), the DOD-CFR has responsibility for planning activities, setting priorities, and determining effective strategies designed to maximize corporate and foundation support to the University. Responsibility will focus on corporate and foundation prospects capable of making gifts of $100,000 - $1,000,000 from a portfolio of prominent companies and foundations where long-term relationships need to be built. The DOD-CFR is responsible for managing a prospect/donor portfolio in various stages of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. They work collaboratively with faculty, academic leadership, and development offices to create and implement strategies for approaching companies and foundations; serve as a recognized campus expert in corporate and foundation engagement; and regularly have impact and influence on campus policy and program development. The DOD-CFR's portfolio includes many of the campus's most important corporate and foundation partners. The Incumbent will be encouraged to operate autonomously and to exercise initiative and authority within general parameters set by the EDOD-CFR and to represent the EDOD-CFR and the Department whenever necessary.

The DOD-CFR will apply knowledge and understanding of UC San Diego, its faculty, research, and academic programs to better position the University for grant and gift funding. The holder of this position must be comfortable working with prominent foundation leaders and senior volunteers as well as executive level contacts; and must have a successful record of building partnerships and securing corporate and foundation support for complex organizations. Incumbent will work collaboratively with other units within Advancement as well as the Office of Research Affairs and Office of Contract and Grant Administration to administer internal processes and protocols and will serve as a grant and research data integrity officer within Advancement. Additionally, they will foster an equitable, inclusive, and diverse working environment in all activities, strategies, and interactions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.

  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education / healthcare, generally. Expert knowledge of the location, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.

  • Expert knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.

  • Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.

  • Expert organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills. Expert project / program management skills, including skills in setting and meeting program / project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.

  • Expert level skills in maintaining confidentiality.

  • Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including: gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition and administration.

  • Experiences as a development officer in a highly sophisticated donor-centered fund-raising environment as a direct line fund-raiser with five years or more of experience.

  • Demonstrated success at securing major gifts or grants by developing and implementing strategic solicitation plans in-line with institution and academic goals in higher education for gifts or grants of $100,000+ from corporations and foundations, both local and national.

  • Proven record of writing solicitations for a significant project/gift ($100,000 - $1,000,000, with an emphasis on gifts of $250,000 and above) directed to foundations and corporations.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement persuasive cultivation ideas and techniques and provide critical analysis, using sound judgment with realistic expectations for prospects and donors.

  • Demonstrated skill in the technique of donor prospect research with the ability to extract the pertinent/critical information from various documents.

  • Proven ability to learn appropriate levels of information about a broad range of academic disciplines and interdisciplinary areas.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, faculty, donors, volunteers and University officials, with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, professionalism and discretion

  • Persistence and initiative in pursuing goals and objectives of the Development office on behalf of UC San Diego

  • Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters as they relate to sensitive donor relations issues.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and the group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills with emphasis on public speaking and presenting information about programs to potential donors and audiences in an understandable and compelling fashion.

  • Ability to learn and comprehend University priorities quickly.
