Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit :

The mission of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy. Our faculty, staff, students and administrators work collaboratively to build and foster an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and accessible to people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and beliefs.

The school offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Enrollment includes about 1,000 undergraduates and 130 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. Our faculty members are international thought leaders whose scholarly and creative activities are visible and respected in the public realm.

Position Summary :

The Hussman School of Journalism and Media invites applications for a temporary part-time Contributing Writer. The contributing writer will collaborate with the editorial team to develop content for an undergraduate textbook on news writing and reporting. This role involves researching, writing and revising assigned chapters or sections that translate professional journalism practices into accessible, pedagogically sound instructional material. The contributing writer will craft explanatory text, develop practical examples and case students, glossary terms, and create exercises that will help undergraduate student build foundational skills and critical thinking. Working closely with the book’s editors, the contributing writer will ensure content aligns with learning objectives, maintains consistency with the book’s overall voice and structure, and reflects current industry standards, best practices and realities. The contributing writer will be expected to work collaboratively with other team members meeting deadlines, incorporating editorial feedback, and fact-checking content for accuracy.

This position is eligible for remote work schedule. Employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

The successful candidate will possess academic credentials and / or professional experience in journalism or related media fields. A strong track record demonstrating excellence in news research, writing and editorial work is essential. Candidates should be able to produce clear, accurate and compelling writing suitable for undergraduate journalism education.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

The preferred candidate will have full-time or part-time experience teaching or mentoring students in journalism coursework or working with student publications. They will be able to demonstrate content-development acumen, including the ability to break down complex news principles and practices using relevant examples and accessible terms for undergraduate learners.
