Job Overview
- Maintains regular attendance and may be required to work a set or rotating schedule, extended shifts, and / or overtime in accordance with agency leave policies. Performs additional duties as assigned.
- Administers prescribed medications and treatments through oral, rectal, internal, or injection routes. Assists other healthcare professionals-including Registered Nurses (RNs), Physicians, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), and Physician Assistants (PAs)-in assessing and caring for patients. Makes rounds and provides nursing care in various hospital areas as needed. Demonstrates competency in performing complex technical nursing procedures in compliance with hospital, and state regulations. Trains and orients new LVN staff, introducing them to patient needs and preferences.
- Performs complex nursing procedures, such as wound care and respiratory treatments, in accordance with facility and state standards. Collects laboratory specimens and conducts designated screening tests per lab personnel instructions.
- Monitors patients' weight, diet, meals, and vital signs. Observes and assesses patients' conditions following medication administration, treatments, and procedures. Guides psychiatric nursing assistants in monitoring individuals post-treatment or procedure.
- Accurately and promptly documents treatments, observations, and assessments in the medical record (electronic or paper) in compliance with hospital procedures. Recognizes and reports symptoms of illness to the RN and / or Primary Care Provider.
- Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and effective communication within the treatment team. Shares relevant information verbally and in writing with other healthcare team members to support informed decision-making.
- Serves as a mentor and resource for new LVNs. Assists the RN Supervisor in providing on-the-job instruction and training for new staff.
- Supports RNs in implementing protocols, procedures, and health and safety initiatives. Assists the Infection Control Nurse by applying infection prevention measures, contributing to quality assurance activities, and supporting therapeutic nursing programs. Collects data as requested by the RN or Primary Care Provider.
- Provides patient education in alignment with recovery plans, including explaining medication names, purposes, and expected outcomes when administering treatments or procedures.
- Ensures necessary supplies are available for scheduled procedures and treatments. Maintains unit inventory, restocks as needed, and orders supplies through appropriate channels.
- Responds promptly to emergencies to ensure patient safety. Adheres to all hospital safety and infection control policies.
- Performs additional duties as assigned. This may include participating in disaster response, recovery efforts, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate work schedules or locations.
Skills
Knowledge of nursing standards, procedures, and best practices in patient care.Knowledge of emergency protocols and equipment (e.g., CPR) and the ability to provide emergency care to patients or staff.Skill in identifying and resolving problems using sound reasoning and judgment.Proficiency in operating computers and applicable software systems.Skill in providing direct patient care across diverse populations.Ability to deliver care to individuals with complex medical, mental health, or behavioral health needs.Ability to accurately prepare and maintain patient records, including use of electronic health record systems.Effective communication and instructional skills.Ability to interact appropriately with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, their families, and staff.Must maintain current CPR certification and possess the physical strength and flexibility to safely perform CPR and TIPS.Licensure
Must hold a current license to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the State of Texas or in a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.If required to transport patients, must possess a valid Texas driver's license or obtain one within 90 days of hire. Applicants with an out-of-state license must provide a certified driving record.Graduation from an accredited LVN program.Minimum of six (6) months of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse required; twelve (12) months preferred.At least six (6) months of experience (paid or volunteer) working directly with individuals with mental illness preferred.Other locations available across Texas.
