Job description

Director, Buehler Planetarium

The Director will ensure that this occurs by developing a comprehensive strategic plan of growth and daily operation along with seeking and obtaining private and public funds to supplement the existing budget. In addition, this position is to administer Buehler Planetarium and Observatory, including daily operations, personnel management, and management of financial resources, maintenance programs, and repair projects and to promote this unique facility to the college and community. This position operates this venue as a college and community facility, providing program support and presentations to college groups, and providing programs that are open to the public.

Minimum Education : Bachelor's degree required. Minimum Experience / Training : Six or more years in business or function field and three years of management experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Essential Functions :

  • Administers and directs operations of Buehler Planetarium & Observatory. Provides opportunities and services for college (both student population through academic classes and administration), the local school district and private schools, and the community. Conducts this venue so that any college class, group, or department may utilize it, with the appropriate support such as technical knowledge and staffing.
  • Supervises the design and development of all publications, brochures, newsletters.
  • Oversees regular maintenance, construction projects and repair projects of all equipment and facilities of Buehler Planetarium and Observatory.
  • Maintains and administers budget and resource allocation of Planetarium operating funds.
  • Supervises and evaluates staff to maintain high quality and performance.
  • Supervises the production and presentation of multi-media Planetarium shows to ensure the academic program support needs of college-wide instruction, the Broward School District, FAU, and others.
  • Provides safe environment compliant with accepted standards and practices for events in an enclosed venue Buehler Planetarium and Observatory to ensure the comfort and well-being of guests. Ensures appropriate safety and emergency procedures to enable safe and expeditious evacuation.
  • Researches, identifies, cultivates and solicits supplemental operating and endowment funds through grant proposals, special events and other projects - in conjunction with Senior Director and Foundation.
  • Supervises and reports activities to the Buehler Trust regarding the annual grant-funded internship program to train professionals for advanced careers in planetarium and observatory science.
  • Participates in local, national and international organizations, including Broward County Cultural Affairs, International Planetarium Society, Southeastern Planetarium Associations, Florida Museum Association, and Florida Planetarium Association to bring the most current techniques, skills, and contacts to BC (as assigned).
  • Establishes and develops professional partnerships; a current example : coordinating the publication of the professional journal for the Southeastern Planetarium Association.
  • Supports recruitment at BC by directly interacting with students and faculty participating in events at public and private schools, and by hosting student groups from throughout the region.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
