ABOUT THE LUCAS MUSEUM OF NARRATIVE ART

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art believes in the power of illustrated stories to connect us. With a growing collection that encompasses artworks from across cultures, places, times, and mediums, including paintings, sculptures, murals, photography, comic art, book and magazine illustrations, and the arts of filmmaking, the museum will explore narrative arts potential to prompt questions, invite opinions, inspire community, and move people to think about the impact of images on our world.

Co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the Lucas Museum was designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec as executive architect and is under construction in Los Angeless Exposition Park. An 11-acre campus with extensive new green space designed by Studio-MLA will embrace the museums 300,000-square-foot building, which will feature expansive galleries, two state-of-the-art theaters, and dedicated spaces for learning and engagement, dining, retail, and events.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art seeks a Collections Management Technician, Generalist Level II, who will support the preservation, organization, movements, accessibility, and safety of the Lucas Museums collection in storage. Reporting to an Associate Collections Manager, the position holder will be familiar with and adhere to museum best practices for safe object handling, and archival rehousing for a variety of collection materials ranging from objects, textiles, paintings, and works on paper. This 1-year term position will focus on Collection Management-focused tasks involved with the inaugural opening of the Museum to the public as well as collections move. Daily tasks will include inventorying and rehousing the collection, updating locations and object information in the collections database, and pulling and staging works for incoming registration, viewings, research, photography, conservation, shipment, and more. There will be a focus on packing and unpacking of the collection and managing daily transport logistics.

The position holder will work collaboratively across departments and contribute to the development and implementation of Collections Management policies, procedures, and workflows related to the Museums storage program.

This is a one-year opportunity.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate closely with the Associate Collections Managers, Collections Technicians, and fuller Museum Services staff to carry out departmental goals and objectives
  • Provide safe art handling for diverse art collections, including works on paper, small- and large-scale sculpture, paintings, and textiles
  • Pack objects in temporary and permanent packing material, transfers objects between storage and gallery spaces, and manages object movement between multiple Museum locations
  • Accurately record and track object information in the museums collection database, The Museum System (TMS)
  • Support the department in all tasks related to packing, managing and moving artwork for the inaugural opening; support the unpacking and organization of the collection into permanent storage
  • Work closely and collaborate with other departments throughout the process of the inaugural installation as necessary to achieve the overall goal of opening the museum
  • Assist with tracking departmental supplies and materials in storage, and communicating orders to be placed by the Associate Collections Manager
  • Assist with receiving and releasing art shipments, oversee loading and off-loading trucks
  • Participate in ongoing storage maintenance, which may include environmental monitoring, pest management, and emergency response preparations
  • Support the development and implementation of department policies and workflows including storage access procedures, handling and archival rehousing guidelines
  • Assist with the management of department schedules to meet milestones and goals in collaboration with Collections Management techs and other departments
  • Support day-to-day logistics of collection processes, materials, and spaces throughout the museum and offsite storage facilities
  • Assist with handling artwork for ongoing collection photography sessions
  • Undertake training in proper handling, packing, and rehousing techniques
  • Oversee and manage researchers and other visitors to storage spaces by coordinating schedules, work orders, and the resources needed to manage these requests
  • Collaborate with other Collections Management staff and LMNA departments to accomplish multiple simultaneous goals and projects to museum standards and in alignment with best practices
  • Special projects as assigned by Associate Collections Manager

  • QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education & Experience
  • Bachelor'sdegree from an accredited college or university in art, art history, museum studies, arts administration, or a closely related field, preferred
  • 3-5yearsofexperiencein art handling,collections care, and museum best practices,required
  • Experience handling and packing a variety of collection material including paintings, objects, textiles, and works on paper for long term storage and transport, required
  • Experience moving crates, oversize collection material and storage furniture
  • Experience designing and building containers and structures out of wood
  • Experience with power tools, including compound saw, track saw, router, nail gun, sander, jigsaw and other woodworking tools, required
  • Experience building travel frames and crates for artwork transport, preferred
  • Open, collaborative, and proactive style of communication and problem-solving with an aptitude for system and process creation

    Salary and titles will be assigned commensurate to the successful candidates education and experience. An attractive compensation package will be offered to the successful candidate(s).
