Job description

Summary

Organizational Location : This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Information and Technology, Enterprise Infrastructure and Operations Directorate located in Ashburn, VA.

As an Information Technology Specialist (Network), you will lead the engineering, implementation, enhancement, and maintenance of Network Performance Monitoring (NPM) tools and the enterprise Network Management System (NMS), while improving network operations through automation, centralized control, and failover solutions. This position starts at a salary of $142,488.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $185,234.00 (GS-14, Step 10) with promotion potential to $185,234 (GS-14 Step 10).

In this position, you will become a key member of the Office of Information Technology team performing the below typical work assignments :

  • Identifying gaps in network monitoring and management capabilities and making recommendations on new technologies and solutions to bridge the gaps and enhance existing capabilities.
  • Developing scripts and leading efforts to implement network orchestration solutions to automate complex workflows and tasks for network tools.
  • Translating and interpreting departmental IT policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure that network tools and solutions comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Performing tasks involving design, documentation, development, modification, testing, installation, implementation, and support of new or existing network tools.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to identify and define business or technical requirements applied to the design, development, implementation, management, and support of network tools and solutions.

  • Qualifications

    Basic Requirement : Individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.

  • Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
  • You qualify for this position if you meet the basic requirement listed above and possess one year of specialized experience as described below.

    Experience : You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as :

  • Coordinating the gathering and review of network utilization statistics and performance measures to ensure network stability, quality and maximum performance while maintaining system security and integrity.
  • Preparing and presenting executive summaries to senior management officials on major incidents and initiatives.
  • Leading and supporting special projects and additional tasks to include formal and informal briefings, operational support and other assignments as requested and required.
  • Evaluating the feasibility of adapting new methods to enhance established methods, process and procedures; identifying gaps and weakness; providing recommendations and guidance with the creation, review, updating and implementation of policies and procedures and regulations.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Residency : There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP.
