The City Attorney’s Office provides legal advice to all City Departments, the City Council and all Boards and Commissions. In addition, the City Attorney’s Office provides risk management services through the Risk Management Division.
The Position
The Paralegal position is responsible for the preparation and management of complex legal documents and performs specialized legal administrative services at the direction of the professional staff in the City Attorney's office. The Paralegal works independently within prescribed guidelines and protocol to plan, organize, and complete assignments, which are reviewed upon completion.
Meticulous , detail-oriented , with a strong work ethic and a collaborative mindset. They are industrious , adaptable, and eager to learn new skills to support team and organizational goals. They consistently maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with integrity. In addition, the individual will be resourceful, innovative and possess strong customer service skills to communicate in a professional and effective manner both verbally and in writing . The ability to be flexible , sensible and respectful while working in a diverse environment is critical.

Class Specification
Under direction provides a variety of highly responsible paralegal and administrative services to support the activities of the City Attorney’s Office; performs related duties as assigned. This class is characterized by the responsibility to provide a variety of specialized legal and administrative services not requiring the licensing of an attorney. The position supports legal research, document preparation and case file management, and may also assist in specialized areas such as liability, risk management or workers’ compensation. The Paralegal works independently within established guidelines and exercises sound judgment in handling complex legal assignments. The position requires independent judgment and thorough knowledge of applicable legal procedures, laws and policies. Discretion and tact are essential when handling confidential or sensitive documents and information. This classification is distinguished from the Deputy City Attorney I position in that it does not require a law degree and performs less complex legal tasks.

Knowledge of : Resources available for researching legal and statutory questions; legal research techniques; municipal, administrative, contract, business corporate and real estate law; legal terminology and common legal documents; federal, state and administrative court practices and procedures; legal concepts and the role of law in society.
Skill in : commonly used office software applications.
Ability to : conduct legal research; prepare legal briefs, opinions, reports, ordinances, resolutions and other legal documents for the attorney's office and for other city departments as assigned; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; type at a speed necessary for successful job performance; follow written and verbal instructions; work independently; develop and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, support staff and clients; identify and resolve problems; analyze and apply the provisions of laws, ordinances, regulations, court cases and opinions.
Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.
Education / Experience
Any combination of education and / or experience that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory job performance would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be : Possession of a Paralegal Certificate and two years highly responsible legal secretarial experience, or five years of experience as a legal secretary with considerable experience performing legal research and preparing drafts of legal documents. Legal secretarial experience in a local government law office setting is desirable.
