Sr Director, State Government Relations – Nationwide
Job Summary
Lead lobbying activities at the state level for Nationwide’s Insurance Enterprise across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and the District of Columbia. Serve as the face of Nationwide at the state level with legislators, insurance commissioners, governors and staff, working with business units, trade associations, lobby firms and coalitions to influence favorable legislative and regulatory change.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitors and advocates on key state legislative and regulatory initiatives, providing updates to Nationwide and OCLO management.
- Prepares reports on state legislative and regulatory matters for the District of Columbia and New England states.
- Develops and maintains relationships with State and National Trade Associations, ensuring Nationwide’s priorities align with theirs.
- Manages external lobbying firms retained in the District of Columbia and New England states.
- Makes recommendations on corporate and PAC contributions for the District of Columbia and New England states, attending functions to build key relationships and representing the company at trade and political events.
- Prioritizes and provides input to state legislative and executive branch officials to impact governmental decisions, maintaining communication channels.
- Attends legislative committee meetings; presents testimony on company positions; arranges for technical staff testimony.
- Supervises significant insurance legislation through direct contact with legislators, reports, trade and publications.
- Monitors, influences, and projects likely passage or defeat of legislation, acquiring relevant bills and recommending actions.
- Coordinates and manages external lobbyist teams per state, evaluating retention decisions.
- Provides strategic regulatory and public policy leadership, supervising policy advocacy priorities.
- Advises senior management on significant state-level legislative and executive activity, preparing arguments in support or opposition as needed.
- Sits on advisory committees and task forces, engaging with trade associations and other organizations.
- Establishes and improves relationships with public officials, facilitating meetings on company matters.
Qualifications & Experience
Education : Undergraduate studies in political science or related fields; JD or advanced degree preferred.Experience : Ten years related to legislation and regulation, at least five involving insurance, from business or governmental viewpoints.Knowledge, Abilities & Skills : Highest ethical standards; intimate knowledge of the legislative process and regulatory agencies; knowledge of Nationwide operations or the insurance industry; excellent verbal and written skills; strong interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills.Preferred candidate location : District of Columbia or one of the New England states, willing to travel extensively (approx. 30% of work time).Reporting Relationships
Reports to Vice President, Government Relations.

Salary
National salary range for Sr Director, State Government Relations : $139,000.00 - $272,000.00.
Expected starting salary range : $146,000.00 - $244,000.00.
