Summary of Duties
This position is responsible for the day-to-day monitoring and reporting of Amtrak's Safety Performance. This person provides advanced analytical and reporting services to Safety and the business lines within Operations with the goal of achieving proactive risk identification, mitigation strategies and / or improved processes that reduce injuries, hazards and risk in the workplace. This person will have a full understanding of the multiple data sources the team relies on to accomplish their analytical tasks. Additionally, this person will assist with the analysis / assurance of safety processes and procedures to determine effectiveness and monitor and report on Safety Performance KPIs. The key focus of this position is to advance Amtrak's safety culture by using data for proactive safety risk identification and mitigation.
Essential Functions
Perform comprehensive data and trend analyses using diverse internal and external data sources to identify safety risks and highlight opportunities for mitigation strategies and process improvements. Partner with Operational Safety and frontline operations teams to identify, track, and analyze emerging safety trends. Gather business requirements, analyze complex data sets, and develop dashboards, reports, and visualizations to support accurate and actionable reporting of Amtrak's safety performance. Serve as a subject matter expert on Safety Performance, collaborating cross-functionally with departments across Amtrak to ensure alignment and data integrity. Support the development and documentation of new safety processes and procedures, leveraging data insights to inform decision-making. Participate in safety committees, contributing data-driven insights to support strategic safety initiatives. Lead and support special projects and respond to ad-hoc data requests, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of analytical outputs. Assist the Sr. Manager, Central Reporting & Compliance with data and reporting needs related to regulatory interactions and requests. Monitor industry-wide safety trends and best practices, integrating relevant findings into Amtrak's safety improvement efforts. Maintain a foundational understanding of internal and external safety reporting protocols and ensure compliance with applicable standards. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in safety, Transportation, Business, Data Analytics or a related field (equivalent combination of training, education, and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree). Experience working in safety performance, system / operational safety, transportation operations, or another similar position. Working knowledge of transportation safety regulations, policies, and programs. Proven experience in data and trend analysis. Proven effective presentation and report writing skills with the ability to speak in front of large groups and Senior Leaders.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect and review data, identify trends, and recommend appropriate corrective actions / mitigations. Ability to interpret complex rules and regulations. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio). Ability to utilize Microsoft SharePoint, SAP Business Objects, Tableau and similar programs. Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization. Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team. High attention to detail and organizational aptitude. Logical thinking skills in order to work through tough problems. Must keep records and information privileged and confidential. Ability to effectively plan, set priorities, and work on multiple projects simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines.
Preferred Experience, Education or Qualifications
6-9 Years working in safety performance, system / operational safety, transportation operations, or another similar position. Prior railroad safety and operations experience preferred. Formal training in Safety / Safety Risk Management preferred. Formal training / education in Safety Management System (SMS) preferred. Transit Safety and Security Program- Rail (TSSP-Rail) Certificate preferred. Experience in project management and process improvement preferred. Prior experience working with Safety data preferred. Experience working with external government agencies such as FRA and NTSB preferred.
Work Environment
Conducts in-person, telephone, and email dialogues. Works on computer 8 hours per weekday. Ability to work in an Amtrak office at least 4 days per week. Must have manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate office equipment. Willingness to travel occasionally.
