Payroll Specialist

Located in scenic Abingdon, Virginia VHCC proudly serves Washington County, western Smyth County, and the city of Bristol. As one of 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). We offer a wide range of credentials, including Associate degrees, certificates, career studies certificates, and continuing education courses.
The Payroll Specialist will play a key role in supporting payroll and HR operations, contributing to the smooth and efficient functioning of our administrative team. Position Responsibilities Include :
- Provide professional and courteous customer service to all employees.
- Independently prepares and assists all payroll functions.
- Updates and maintains employee master files and databases from source documents.
- Prepares and inputs all payrolls according to VHCC, state, and federal guidelines and laws.
- Updates employee fringe benefit and deductions as appropriate.
- Reconciles payroll and helps identify and resolve discrepancies.
- Answer employee payroll questions.
- Prepares and submits accurate payroll reports by deadlines.
- Assisting with onboarding of new employees.
- Handle direct deposit requests and changes.
- Verification of hours worked, leave requests, and pay adjustments.
- Provides support for the HR Director's office.

Strong attention to detail.Working knowledge of accounting systems.Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally & in writing, and to adapt to changes in policies, procedures, and priorities proficiently.Ability to handle multiple work assignments, prioritize work, and read, explain and apply regulations, standards and procedures.Ability to work independently to complete assignments with strict deadlines, but also exhibit a willingness to work with other staff members when needed or requested.Experience working with Excel, to include designing & maintaining complex spreadsheets with various formulas, pivot tables, and macros.Combination of training and experience indicating possession of the knowledge and abilities to successfully perform job functions.Additional Considerations :
Associate or bachelor's degree with coursework in accounting or business or a related field.2 plus years' experience in payroll.Knowledge of general payroll practices, including the ability to apply this knowledge.Experience performing financial & statistical analysis, to include reconciling and researching variances.Understanding of Payroll Laws per State and Federal guidelines.Each agency within the Commonwealth of Virginia is dedicated to recruiting, supporting, and maintaining a competent and diverse work force.
