Department Overview

The Transmission System Planning (TSP) department performs interconnection studies, multi-year assessments, and develops a portfolio of transmission expansion plans and projects to meet the company's transmission needs for safe and reliable electric service, adhering to North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) standards. The department actively participates in the development of these standards and supports transmission expansion policy and strategy to meet renewable portfolio standards (RPS) goals. It also provides support to project implementation, operations, legal, contractual, and other internal departments.

Position Summary

This position is represented by the Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) and is subject to collective bargaining.

The role involves providing technical support and reliability analysis for transmission system development, especially related to generation interconnection studies to support California's RPS goals, CPUC mandates, and policy initiatives, while ensuring NERC compliance. The Journey level engineer resolves problems with some guidance, with increasing independence and responsibility as experience grows. The position requires coordination with internal and external stakeholders of PG&E Transmission Planning Department.

This is a hybrid role, combining remote work with work on-site within the PG&E Service Territory.

PG&E provides a salary range based on local market conditions and individual qualifications, with annual salaries ranging from $115,128 to $175,080.

Job Responsibilities

• Develop and recommend innovative, comprehensive, environmentally acceptable transmission plans to management and CAISO for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the electric transmission system.
• Participate in CAISO Generation Interconnection and Deliverability Allocation Procedure Studies (GIDAP), performing power flow and transient stability simulations to meet compliance standards.
• Support or lead generation interconnection study deliverables, including base case creation, analysis, and mitigation development, coordinating schedules with CAISO and interconnection customers.
• Conduct long-term studies to develop strategies and plans for reliable and efficient system operation.
• Create base case assumptions and models for WDT and Rule 21 Tariff connected generation projects.
• Perform transmission planning studies for retail load interconnections, ensuring system reliability and efficiency.
• Collaborate with entities like CAISO and CPUC on planning projects and issues.
• Review and develop electrical models of transmission lines and substations for planning databases.
• Develop EPCL, Python scripts, and other programming tools for simulation and analysis.
• Review electrical single-line diagrams and operational schematics for future planning.
• Promote a safe working environment and address unsafe conditions proactively.
• Participate in industry initiatives, workgroups, and forums impacting PG&E's transmission system.
• Represent PG&E in internal and external meetings, providing technical guidance.
• Engage in complex studies, including RAS design studies.
• Mentor junior engineers and planning staff.
