  • The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

    Position Summary

    The Assistant Director will work in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, which includes the units of Student Support and Student Engagement. Reporting to the Associate Dean, they will be part of a high-performing, dynamic team tasked with ensuring a high-quality experience for students in all OSA areas, with a focus on Student Organizations. The Assistant Director will be the direct lead contact and advisor for student leaders, helping them execute programing, events, and logistical details essential to student life. The Assistant Director should be creative about ways to reimagine, redesign, and simplify the ways in which students engage and develop programming.

    This role may require some evening and weekend responsibilities.

    Responsibilities

    • Advise and provide daily direct support for 30+ student organizations and student government
    • Implement changes to existing Student Organization framework
    • Communicate student leader policies and requirements, managing compliance of institutional policies related to event planning
    • Manage compliance and scheduling of student leader required trainings (Title IX and other essential policies)
    • Provide content for the weekly newsletter (student events & opportunities, and program updates)
    • Responsible for onboarding of all new student leaders
    • Develop professional development opportunities for student leaders
    • Facilitate purchasing and food orders for student events
    • Facilitate room reservations for student events
    • Lead frequent meetings with student leaders to discuss decision-making, assess student interests, respond to student needs, and anticipate student programming / leadership issues
    • Responsible for review and approval of event requests
    • Plan the Delta Omega Honor Society annual ceremony and manage all steps in the selection and induction process
    • Maintain student engagement website in MSPH website
    • Manage the Campus Groups platform for events, student programming, membership rosters, student organizations, and documents / forms
    • Sets up and executes various elections processes for new student leaders and school-wide student senator position
    • Plan the International Student Orientation, including inviting speakers, preparing schedule, and making arrangements
    • Responsible for organizing the annual student life expo, a school-wide fair for new students to learn about student organizations and vital campus partner offices
    • Provide calendar of events and annual report of student led initiatives
    • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned or requested
    • Participate and assist with events and projects sponsored by the Office of Education (i.e., Admitted Students Day, Orientation and Graduation) and as needed- prepare and present to prospective students, admitted students, and current students at various events throughout the year
    • Ability to use digital platforms, social media, and technology to plan, promote, track, and execute student events
    • Collaborate on supporting the RISE Peer Mentoring program- training student leaders, reviewing applications, assisting with programming
    • Minimum Qualifications

      The successful incumbent will have experience in higher education, preferably with graduate students. They must be computer literate, with a solid background in Microsoft Office 365. The Assistant Director must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. They will be able to set goals and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, and work successfully under pressure, as a member of a team, and independently. The individual in this role will be detail-oriented and exhibit excellent judgment and discretion, while always maintaining confidentiality.

    • Bachelor's degree, plus three years of related experience.
    • Proficiency in meeting time-sensitive deadlines while leading multiple, concurrent projects with minimal supervision is required.
    • S / he / they must excel at engaging and supporting students in a graduate setting
    • Experience in student programming and event planning / management
    • Experience in website updating, digital communications, managing administrative processes, conducting surveys, and using digital tools for these tasks
    • Ability to utilize Campus Groups, Canva, Qualtrics, MailChimp, SLATE, or similar platforms
    • Comfortable with public speaking and preparing presentation materials
