Description of Work Unit

Veterinary Teaching Hospital

At the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ) we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. This work unit exists to provide administration and direction of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and provide a support facility for service to the general public and referring veterinarians.

Position Summary

CSU's Small Animal Orthopedic Medicine and Mobility ( OMM ) service is looking for a veterinary assistant to assist with the OMM service's current case load for receiving on the clinic floor. Our service uses state-of-the-art orthopedic techniques and technology, to diagnose and non-surgically treat injury and disease of the musculoskeletal system with the goal to enhance the quality of life for pets and their owners by easing pain, restoring function, and improving quality of life.

Required Job Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Basic animal handling and restraint skills within a veterinary setting.

Ability to follow instructions and work within a team.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Previous experience in veterinary or animal care settings.

Fear Free certification or experience handling stressed patients.

Interest in pursuing veterinary technician education.

Essential Duties

Job Duty CategoryPatient Care

Duty / Responsibility

Facilitates patient handling, diagnostics, monitoring, and treatment during appointments and procedures. Assists with blood draws, and small procedures such as X-rays, CT, shockwave, or joint taps. Duties are completed by this position as the patient advocate, with the goal of providing and ensuring outstanding patient care, through professional interaction with students / staff.

Assists in transporting patients to radiology or CT for imaging and transporting patients to the clinical treatment area and back to clients. Performs duties with the goal of increasing efficiency and safety of patients during transport throughout the hospital.

Organizes / Stocks OMM cabinet, rounds room, and ortho treatment area. Helps in cleaning clipper blades and collecting supplies from central supply. Performs duties with the goal of helping to facilitating efficient care within the service.

Assists students / interns / residents with orthopedic exams and client communication. Assists with laboratory, and imaging requests. Assists with getting consent forms and estimates signed by clients. Performs duties with the goal of facilitating an efficient and client-oriented orthopedic service.

Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the needs and smooth operation of the service.
