The incumbent works within the Maintenance Division of Facilities Engineering Service at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center as a Motor Vehicle Operator. Vehicles operated range from 2 to 4-person all-electric utility vehicles, Dual-Use vehicles, 70 passenger busses and dump / plow trucks with a GVWR of up to 33,000 pounds. The MVO duties include patient transport, vehicle maintenance, winter operations including snow removal and plowing and groundskeeping work performing lawn mowing and trimming.

Major duties and responsibilities include :

• Operate a large stake truck with a maximum load capacity of 18,000 pounds.
• Operate dump trucks (all year long) with GVWRs of 33,000 pounds, air brakes, plows, and salt spreaders (for winter operations).
• Work closely with hospital clinical staff to coordinate transportation to and from prearranged therapy outings.
• Operate dual Use vehicle is utilized frequently, as it is equipped for wheel-chairs, and has a power lift for wheel chair access.
• Seek to cost-effectively meet or exceed compliance with applicable federal, state and local environmental.
• Transport physically impaired patients, using safety tie-downs for wheelchairs.
• Record vehicle use on the proper forms.
• Inspect vehicles before use.
• Maneuver and back the dump trucks and the stake truck into tight openings with low visibility for storage while not in use.
• Operate ambulance buses and passenger buses for both long and short hauls.
• Drive in all types of weather and may be subjected to driving in all types of traffic.
• Ensure that vehicles are not overloaded with cargo, equipment being towed is within the operating parameters.
• Ensure that operator-level maintenance is complete.
• Adhere to all safety regulations established by the city, state, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Designated Drug-Testing Position : Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Qualifications :

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10 / 14 / 2025. Experience : A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Screen-Out Element : Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Examples of qualifying related experience include : ability to operate various types of gasoline and / or diesel-powered vehicles; inspecting vehicles and performing operator maintenance; determining the shortest and safest routes to travel; performing duties utilizing radio communications techniques; operating, starting, stopping, backing, and driving a Mobile Medical Unit.

Driver's License Requirement : Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement to operate a motor vehicle. Applicants have one (1) year to obtain the required CDL.

Physical Requirements : All MVO's perform the following movements : stooping, crouching, throwing, pushing, pulling, lifting (heavy lifting with frequency), jumping from loading platforms to trucks, and jumping from trucks to loading platforms.

Working Conditions : Drives in all types of weather and may be subjected to driving in all types of traffic. Works outside in all weather conditions, and inside areas that may be noisy, dusty, drafty, and where vehicle exhaust is present. The equipment, tools and tasks involved at this level require special care to avoid injuries.
