Legal Secretary Position
Join a dynamic legal team that supports the vital operations of the City of Wichita. As a Legal Secretary, youll play a key role in delivering professional legal and administrative support to attorneys in the Law Department. Working under general supervision, you will draft, prepare, and organize legal correspondence and documentation, manage litigation calendars, and assist with case file management using modern case management systems. This position requires discretion, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of legal terminology and processes. Your ability to anticipate needs, maintain confidentiality, and ensure seamless office operations makes you a trusted partner in legal service delivery. You will report directly to the Chief Deputy City Attorney and contribute meaningfully to the Citys legal functions.
Examples of Work Performed :
- Takes machine or oral dictation and transcribes and types from notes.
- Answers telephone, receives visitors, and attends meetings to take notes and prepare the minutes.
- May compute, record, and maintain files concerning financial, personnel, payroll or purchasing information.
- Accepts appointments for supervisor and sets up calendar.
- Types varied articles, reports, letters, forms or other material.
- Prepares pleadings, opinions, briefs, ordinances, and resolutions as directed.
- Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work :
Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures, office machines, business English, spelling and arithmetic.Considerable knowledge of legal terminology and forms used.Ability to handle and understand legal matters.Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information.Ability to compose routine letters and develop and refine internal office procedures.May require ability to make a passing score on a shorthand test.Ability to transcribe from machine dictation or written notes.Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas drivers license.An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
