Workplace Violence Prevention Program Administrator

Accountable for the administration of MedStar Health's Workplace Violence Prevention Program (WVPP) throughout the system. Provides leadership for entity representatives overseeing workplace violence prevention, contractors hired to provide workplace violence prevention training, and administration of systemwide workplace violence prevention initiatives. Develops and recommends program goals and plans to system executive leadership. Oversees the assessment, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of learning and development programs that mitigate workplace violence, enhance workplace safety, or otherwise support the mission, vision, and SPIRIT Values of MedStar Health. In conjunction with executive leadership, human resources, nursing, physician practice, security, and informatics teams, develops and supports tools that facilitate the risk assessment for workplace violence that create a safe environment free of violence. Through data collection and analysis, guides and recommends development of best practices, education, and compliance with external regulatory and accreditation standards, in addition to providing data for purposes of influencing governmental actions on violence prevention in healthcare settings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Administers the MedStar Health Workplace Violence Prevention Program. Leads system wide assessment, planning, development, execution, and evaluation of interventions to mitigate violence. Assesses needs and risk through formal and informal data collection approaches to determine process, technology, facility, and educational gaps.

Contributes to budget planning and resource allocation. Provides budget management and oversight for the program. Serves as a resource to WVPP entity champions on the system WVPP committee. Oversees MedStar's relationships with external workplace violence prevention consultants, contractors, experts, and advisors.

Prioritizes patient safety in the prevention of violence. Partners with system leaders and experts to create and implement appropriate, evidenced based clinical assessment tools that facilitate identification of patients and populations at risk for violence. Utilizing healthcare best practices, facilitates the development and implementation of clinical processes, tools, and education that both stratify risk of violence and address the needs of populations and individuals at risk for violence in patient care settings.

Leads efforts to ensure associate safety through violence mitigation. Collaborates with system leaders in security, emergency management, environment of care, and facilities to ensure physical infrastructure that maximizes associate safety. Utilizes nationally accepted assessment tools to identify facility and system risk while working with system leaders to address opportunities. Implements industry best practices in facility safety related to workplace violence prevention. Works with internal and external stakeholders in the effective violence prevention training of special police / security officers.

Spearheads education in workplace violence prevention. In partnership with system education leaders, creates and implements long range training programs to address workplace violence prevention, including programs in recognizing and preventing escalating behaviors, verbal and physical de-escalation, self-defense, and safe restraint. Coordinates courses, dates, logistics and other associate training activities. Ensures implementation and management of annual required training. Evaluates outcomes and effectiveness of learning offerings.

Collaborates with system security leads to ensure training that meets regulatory requirements while ensuring the safety of special police / security officers and those with whom they interface. Directs contract education efforts to ensure system workplace violence prevention goals are met or exceeded, while ensuring sustainability and value.

Collects and utilizes data to drive interventions and outcomes. Works with occupational health, quality and safety, security, human resources, and informatics leaders to maximize the accurate and efficient input and collection of data and reports for workplace violence. In concert with system and entity quality and safety teams and others, culls, collates, and trends data for the purposes of reporting, compliance, policy implementation, program efficacy and interventions. Creates, implements, and maintains an effective program dashboard that monitors efforts, violence events, and training and adheres to regulatory and accreditation requirements.

In partnership with system and entity accreditation and compliance experts, maintains the regulatory readiness of workplace violence prevention programs. Performs routine assessments of adherence to The Joint Commission standards for workplace violence prevention. Provides guidance, data, and assistance to regulatory assessment for various governmental and regulatory bodies. Utilizes data and assessments to create reports and make program recommendations to entity and system leaders.

Works with system stake holders to lead implementation and awareness of effective care for caregiver programs for victims of violence in the workplace. Facilitates entity and system guidance of staff who engage law enforcement and the judicial system when victims of violence. Promotes system resources of care and support to include Care for the Caregiver, Employee Assistance Program, legal support as allowed, paid time, and referral as necessary.

Participates in hospital / entity and system-wide collaborative committees, task forces, interdisciplinary forums, quality, and performance and service improvement teams. Chairs or co-chairs key action teams charged with the design and implementation of workplace violence prevention initiatives.

Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in workplace violence prevention and associate safety through a variety of professional development activities including, but not limited to, reading the appropriate literature, and attending related seminars and conferences. Demonstrates accountability for own professional development and advancement.

Develops department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Ensures compliance with business unit policies and procedures and governmental and accreditation regulations.

Develops and recommends department operating budget and manages resources according to approved budget.

Selects, trains, orients, and assigns department staff. Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments, and exchange information.

Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and business unit in community outreach efforts.

Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and maintains effective working relationships with other departments.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or other health related advanced degree from a nationally accredited program is required.

Experience

3-4 years of progressively more responsible roles in healthcare program management. required and Experience in healthcare safety programs is preferred. Leadership or supervisory experience is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and / or Compact State Licensure For nurses, licensed as a registered nurse in the State of Maryland or District of Columbia is required. Other licensure as required by profession. required

CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required

Additional unit / specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

Certification in a nationally recognized organization is preferred. Upon Hire preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment. Business acumen and leadership skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact with all levels of management, internal departments, and external agencies. Working knowledge of various computer software applications. The work requires identifying and resolving complex problems, such as developing innovative solutions based on extensive cross-functional knowledge of the various MedStar Health entities and programs. Work assignments are generally received in the form of broad goals for area(s) of responsibility and require considerable judgment regarding the interpretation of policies, development of procedures, and selection of appropriate courses of action.

This position has a hiring range of $111,779 - $212,513
