Institutional Police Sergeant
Under direction of the Chief of Police or designee, supervises and is responsible for the work of subordinate law enforcement officers, security officers, and other civilian staff. Assists in the overall administration of an institution security program, and performs related duties as required.
Responsibilities include explaining and enforcing city and State laws and ordinances and coordination, explaining and interpreting institution security measures, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; making regular contacts with subordinate officers, other institution personnel, the San Francisco Police Department and others to obtain or furnish information concerning security regulations and violations thereof; preparing or supervising the preparation of daily and special reports of security activities. Oversees and / or assists with several key programs and initiatives, including the management of the parking enforcement program, CLERY reporting requirements, and the department's Training Program in compliance with POST. Manages the in-house training program and chairs hiring committees for all police department positions. Responsibilities extend to active participation in Shared Governance committees and assists with planning and scheduling police staffing for athletic and special events. Assists with payroll management and provides critical safety training, such as building evacuation team training and active shooter response training for employees and students. Additionally, attend POST approved training sessions, conduct shift briefings, and manage supply orders. Monitors contracts and payments for alarm systems, as well as the monitoring and upkeep of surveillance cameras. Role also includes community outreach, representing the department at law enforcement events and trainings, and participate in District emergency preparedness training efforts.
Supervision Exercised : Incumbents in this classification supervise subordinate sworn and non-sworn staff.
Minimum Qualifications : Education : High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination) Experience : Three (3) years of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property. License and Certification : Possession of a valid California driver license Possession of a Basic P.O.S.T Certificate issued by California Department of Justice, Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training. Substitution : Possession of an associate degree in Criminal Justice from an accredited college or university may substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience.
Desirable Qualifications : California POST Intermediate Certificate California POST Supervisory Certificate 3 years experience as a Sworn Police Officer

Verification of Experience : Verification may be requested at any time during this recruitment and selection process. Oral Examination : 1. Candidates will be interviewed to evaluate their interpersonal effectiveness, oral communication and information processing abilities. The oral interview will be rated by subject matter experts, who will make recommendations as to which candidates should proceed in the selection process.
2. Background Investigation : Candidates must complete and pass an employment, character and background investigation to determine fitness for employment as an Institutional Police Officer. A comprehensive personal history statement must be completed, and all statements by the candidates are subject to verification. Candidates will be required to pass a polygraph test, a drug test and a psychological screening. Applicants who are untruthful during their background investigation will be disqualified.
A review of judicial and driving records will be conducted. Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment, and have a current history of careful and responsible motor vehicle operation. Prior negligent operator probation, license suspension, drunk, reckless, or hit and run driving, or multiple moving violations may be cause for disqualification, regardless of where they occurred. At the time of application or thereafter, any type of vehicle-related probation, or driving without a valid license, or driving without insurance will be disqualified.
3. Medical Examination : Prior to appointment, candidates must be determined by a licensed physician to be free from any physical condition that would adversely affect the ability to perform the duties of a Peace Officer. Candidates must pass a medical examination by a designated City physician and must meet minimum standards for hearing, color vision, visual acuity and other prescribed physical standards. The applicant's ability to perform the essential functions of the position as construed upon the medical evaluation may be a cause for rejection.
