Job Description
Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for up-front specimen handling and facilitating the workflow in and out of the laboratory.
Assists laboratory personnel with laboratory procedures. May perform some moderate complex tests and support clerical duties.
Relies on establish guidelines to accomplish tasks. Works under close supervision
Job Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent
Comfortable working with multiple computer applications.
Must obtain Louisiana License as Medical Lab Assistant by LSBME within one (1) year of employment.
Job Functions
- Productivity
- Independently coordinates, plans, and utilizes time efficiently to prioritize and organize duties / workload.
- Maintains inventory supply in work area to ensure efficient departmental operations, minizing duplication of energy and service.
- Demonstrates initiative in change adaptation, especially those not covered by written or verbal instructions.
- Ability to perform non complex laboratory testing.
- Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work areas and equipment.
- Responsible for all pre analytical specimen handling and facilitating workflow in and out of laboratory.
- Quality
- Understands specimen requirements for each test and evaluates specimen for proper identification and integrity through visual checks and result evaluation
- Responsible for ensuring proper specimen identification and the ability to recognize discrepancy. Includes troubleshooting and documentation.
- Follows protocol for instrument maintenance, running controls and accepting, verifying and recording q.c. results.
- Recognizes and refers problems and questions outside of own expertise to appropriate supervisory personnel.

- Complies with regulatory standards applicable to area(s) of responsibility.
- Complies with organizational / departmental policies and procedures including, but not limited to, confidentiality, safety, cooperation, flexibility and attendance.

- Assists in developing and maintaining policies and procedures in compliance with regulatory agencies.
