Job Summary :

The Facilities Operations Assistant 1, under the general direction of the Facilities Operations Assistant 2 or higher-level trades, will perform a variety of routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the University facilities and grounds.

This position will be responsible for performing a variety of laborer tasks. The day-to-day tasks assigned will vary according to the operational needs of the University.

Essential Functions :

  • Moves heavy supplies, furniture, equipment, and records.
  • Load and unload heavy equipment, supplies and furniture from trucks by physically lifting items or operating hand truck or forklift.
  • Moves items to and from storerooms and / or warehouses. May maintain storage areas and track items.
  • Delivers supplies and forms to various locations across the University.
  • Assists with the management of moving hand carts, bin inventory and other moving-related furniture, as assigned.
  • Assembles and dissembles furniture using powered and manual hand tools.
  • Assists truck driver and motor vehicle operators in picking up and delivering items. May drive vehicles.
  • Set up, tear down, and remove furniture, partitions and equipment for office moves, conferences, meetings and special events using a diagram or verbal direction.
  • Travels to other offices or locations within the State or facility to pick-up or move equipment, supplies or persons.
  • May lead volunteers and students assigned to work crews by making assignments, distributing, and accounting for equipment and supplies, demonstrating the proper methods of completing work, and supervising the on-site performance of activities and tasks.
  • Assist in the receiving and shipping of various office materials.
  • May work scheduled and unscheduled overtime, including evenings and weekends.

During special events and down-time from moving-related tasks, these duties could be assigned :

  • Perform office-related activities such as filing, alphabetizing, photocopying, sorting, and delivering mail, storing records or supplies on shelves, bins and / or on the floor.
  • Provide campus visitors with information regarding tourist attractions, office locations and the facility’s rules and regulations.
  • Inspect, check, and patrol areas to detect vandalism or non-adherence to safety procedures, report defects, possible hazards or potentially dangerous conditions in the building and adjacent areas.
  • Perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, raking or tilling soil, mowing lawns, applying fertilizers and pesticides, cutting brush and wood, trimming, and removing trees and shrubs, maintaining roads and sidewalks, and removing snow, trash, and other obstructions from the building and surrounding areas.

Load trucks with debris, dirt, and other materials.

  • Assist trades positions in performing the routine and unskilled work such as carrying supplies and equipment, erecting ladders and scaffolding, cleaning, flushing and repairing gutters and drains, removing materials from construction sites, preparing surfaces and spreading paint, digging ditches, loading and unloading trucks, carrying bricks and mortar, performing rough carpentry and masonry work and cleaning the work site after repair work is completed.
  • Operate self-propelled and motorized equipment, such as lawn mowers, pumps, compressors, vehicles, small trucks, and light construction equipment.
  • Assist automotive and other mechanics in performing routine and unskilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment and other machinery such as mounting and dismounting snowplows, salt spreaders, engines, transmissions, and differentials, performing minor engine tune-ups, changing oil, tires, and batteries and cleaning and polishing vehicles.
  • Clean buildings and facilities, which includes but is not limited to vacuuming, mopping, and waxing floors; emptying trash receptacles;

washing lavatories and fixtures within; dusting wand polishing wood and metal fixtures.

Working Environment :

  • Requires heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 50lbs.
  • Work outside in all types of weather.
  • Work indoors in spaces that are not climate controlled.
  • Work may involve considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and / or loud noises.

Minimum Qualifications :

There are no education or experience qualifications for this class. Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and be able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions.

This position is required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated pass the License Event Notification System (LENS) check.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience physically lifting items and / or operating a hand truck, forklift, or pallet jack.
  • Experience driving delivery vehicles.
  • Basic mechanical ability to assemble / disassemble furniture.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Work Schedule : 40 Hours / Week; Monday-Friday; 7 : 00am - 3 : 30pm Salary and Benefits :

$35,177
