JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES : Orients and embeds various tissue types according to embedding procedures and special instructions. Prepares high quality tissue sections according to laboratory protocols using automated or manual microtomes. Performs automated routine staining, using appropriate control slides to exhibit staining characteristics as defined in laboratory procedures. Performs manual and automated routine and special staining (histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence, and in-situ hybridization) protocols following laboratory procedures, using appropriate control slides to exhibit staining characteristics as defined in laboratory procedures. Maintains equipment and facilities in accordance with policies and procedures. Reviews slides and stains as part of quality control processes, verifying staining performance against controls before distribution for interpretation. Performs basic troubleshooting, recognizing when work processes and routine systems (e.g. embedders, microtomes and processors) aren't performing as expected, independently remediating basic problems by taking effective action, and escalating complex problems appropriately. Receives, verifies acceptability, and accessions specimens according to department polices. Processes specimens for testing, interpretation, and submission to other laboratories as needed. Performs accurate data entry throughout the testing, interpretation, and reporting processes. Follows department policies and procedures regarding positive patient identification throughout the testing, interpretation, and reporting processes. Prepares, maintains, and stocks supplies and reagents as needed. Completes quality assurance tasks. Prepares high quality frozen sections. Conducts training for routine histology practices (e.g., embedding, sectioning, and routine automated staining) Supports the laboratory as needed in other functions within the scope of regulation, training and practice. EDUCATION : HS Diploma : High School Diploma or General Education (GED) TYPICAL EXPERIENCE : 1 year recent relevant experience. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE : Knowledge / Skills : Demonstrated advanced knowledge and technical competence in specimen collection and preparation, laboratory operations, and quality assurance in histology. Quantity of Work : Ability to organize and prioritize job duties and assigned tasks for completion within expected time-frames. Quality of Work : Ability to accurately, precisely, and reliably perform job duties and assigned tasks. Demonstrates sound judgment and problem solving relevant to assigned duties. Culturally Competent Communication : Ability to compassionately and effectively interact individuals and groups of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs and behaviors. Workflow Management : Ability to appropriately respond to fluctuations in volume, unexpected situations or problems such as equipment or information system failures,shift-to-shift hand-offs, priority test orders, and specimen integrity issues. Adherence to Practices & Procedures : Ability to follow standard practices, processes, and procedures in sequence. Knowledge of applicable local / state / federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures aimed at ensuring the privacy and safety of patients.
