Job Description

Purpose of Position :

The Phlebotomist is an integral part of the patient care team providing prompt, courteous, and customer-focused service to patients, visitors, and the interdisciplinary departments.

The Phlebotomist is primarily responsible for performing phlebotomy procedures for testing and diagnostic purposes. The Phlebotomist demonstrates knowledge of the organization's service standards and incorporates them into the performance of duties.

Responsibilities :

Identifies patients using 2 patient identifiers and confirms with information on specimen labels prior to performing venipuncture procedure;

notifies nursing staff and supervisor of identification discrepancies immediately.

• Introduces self, explains the nature of the procedure, and provides instruction to patients.
• Obtains venipuncture specimens in accordance with the order of draw, labels all tubes at the patient's bedside, and delivers samples to the appropriate lab in a timely manner.
• Ensures patient confidentiality and patient privacy at all times; uses discretion when discussing matters of confidential nature.
• Registers patients in the EHR System as needed (outpatient setting).
• Documents and maintains Phlebotomy Department activities including completed work, refusals, and labels handed off to the Nursing staff in the appropriate log books.
• Performs clerical tasks in support of the Phlebotomy Department, including answering and responding to calls promptly; escalates issues to supervisor in a timely manner.
• Maintains blood culture pager on person throughout shift and responds to the pager appropriately.
• Monitors phlebotomy supply par levels and assists in ordering, inspecting, storing phlebotomy / laboratory equipment in safe manner;

reports expired and defective / damaged equipment to the supervisor immediately.

Performs all other tasks as assigned by Supervisor or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a senior high school or evidence of having passed an examination for a High School Equivalency Diploma; or,

2. Satisfactory combination and education, training and experience; and,

3. Successful completion of the prescribed training program for Phlebotomist.
