General Description
Responsible for resolving registration issues related to advising, testing, and any other registration related issues. Student Services Specialist offers the unique advising capabilities to students seeking career advice or guidance for transfer or dual / joint admission programs. The Specialist develops programs to address student retention goals and supporting student workshops. The Specialist measures, and may develop measurements for, student learning and outcomes.
Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Provides intrusive academic advising with focus on educational planning and timely program completion.
- Organizes and executes Transfer Fair events.
- Schedules and maintains the calendar of on campus tabling events for 4-year institutions.
- Engages student in career assessment analysis to provide guidance to student on interests and skills.
- Facilitates New Student Orientation sessions.
- Facilitates Instant Decision Days
- Consults with the appropriate department to resolve problems or policy concerns evolving from within the sections of the program or unit supervised.
- Maintains relationships with other 2-year and 4-year counterparts through attendance of transfer conferences, workshops, and meetings.
- Assists with developing student learning / development outcomes measures for Advising and Student Development goals and objectives; collects appropriate data; and completes assessments of results assigned; recommends modifications to existing services based on outcomes.
- Has knowledge of successful retention strategies and implements student retention programs as directed.
- Facilitates transfer-related services training with advising staff
- Acts as institutions representative for NJ Transfer
- Develops and implements student development workshops for new student orientation, career and employment topics, and personal development.
- Prepares reports and studies containing findings and recommendations for the review, information, and assistance of the student development division.
- Responsible for retention efforts with the General Population cohort
- Responsible for specific sub-cohorts of students, to improve retention and completion of those particular sub-cohorts.
- Serves on ad hoc committees as required.
- Provides data on area usage and materials needed for the unit budget.
- Maintains records / data regarding services as directed.
- Performs related responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or designee.
Education Requirements
Master's Degree required in Higher Education or a Master's degree and experience to demonstrate core competencies.
Experience
Two (2) years' experience in college counseling and academic advising or equivalent preferred.
Competencies and Skills Required
Interpersonal, organization and communication skills required.Experience with student information systems in a student development / student affairs capacity.Proficiency with MS office products including Excel and Access and web page development and maintenance.Analytical and problem solving skills.Excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively with a diverse external community and a diverse campus community.Valid driver's license and access to an automobile.Must possess strong interpersonal skills to interact tactfully and courteously with students, the general public, faculty, and other staff members.Must be a "quick study" in order to quickly grasp knowledge of policies and procedures relating to every aspect of student services that a prospective or current student may utilize.Analytical and problem-solving skills.Ability to take required initiative to solve problems.Ability to collaborate with others.Commitment to student service and a diverse population.Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position's duties are normally performed in a typical interior / residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 25 pounds.No or very limited exposure to physical risk.Some travel required.Salary

Terms of Employment
Full Time. Flexible schedule to meet department needs. Some evening, weekends, and extended hours will be required. Ability and willingness to travel on short notice to all on and off- campus sites as needed by the college. Employee must establish primary residency in New Jersey within one year of appointment unless an exemption applies.
