What you will do

This is advanced professional work supervising and directing the work of child protective investigators and support staff. The primary duty is to spend the majority of the time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating employees.

How you will make an impact

  • Supervise, plan and direct workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization of subordinate staff in the delivery of protecting children, working with families and conducting investigations of alleged abused, abandoned, neglected or exploited children.
  • Develop performance standards and job duty expectations with investigators, review standards and plans for continuous improvement.
  • Communicate investigators' compliance with these expectations on a regular basis and provide coaching by acknowledging outstanding performance and offering suggestions for improvement.
  • Evaluate employees against established standards and take corrective action when needed.
  • Promote career development of investigators by ensuring training and leading cross-training efforts on differential investigative skills.
  • Review casework, assessments and safety plans with investigators, and provide consultation and direction to assure appropriateness, clarity, quality, thoroughness and proper documentation.
  • Use management tools in information systems to monitor open cases and manage workflow to prevent backlog and ensure timelines are met.
  • Ensure CPI operations are within legislative authority and compliant with federal and state rules and regulations.
  • Identify improvements and implement adjustments to improve program effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Facilitate and participate in hiring, promoting, disciplining and / or dismissal of employees.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data regarding child protective investigations.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with organizations involved in investigations (community providers, legal services, law enforcement, medical, schools and other resources).
  • Ensure effective communication with deaf or hard-of-hearing customers, manage service records and report data / training needs accordingly.

Qualifications

  • Criteria 1 : A high school diploma or GED equivalent AND
  • Four years of law enforcement experience or active military service (honorably discharged) AND
  • Minimum 2 years of Child Welfare Experience, preferred in Child Protective Investigations AND
  • Current / Active Child Welfare Certification credentials from the Florida Certification Board AND
  • Valid Driver License AND
  • Must possess an operational private vehicle for daily work. Provide proof of vehicle registration and appropriate insurance. The Department provides a Vehicle Insurance Allowance for work use.
  • Criteria 2 : AA Degree or 60+ credit hours from an accredited college or university AND two years of professional work experience OR two years of law enforcement or active military service. Examples of professional work experience include Guardian Ad Litem, Family Support Worker, Group Home Worker, Teacher's Assistant, Family Intervention Specialist, EMT, Case Manager, or other relevant high-stress roles. Minimum 2 years of Child Welfare Experience AND current Child Welfare Certification AND valid driver license AND vehicle requirement.
  • Criteria 3 : A bachelor's degree (degree conferred at application) in social work or related field preferred, AND minimum 2 years of Child Welfare Experience AND current Child Welfare Certification AND valid driver license AND vehicle requirement.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Knowledge of child protection theories and practices, ethics, indicators of abuse and neglect, management and supervision techniques, court procedures, data analysis, and program evaluation. Skills in interviewing, observation, case planning, report writing and staff supervision. Ability to communicate effectively, develop plans, and maintain professional relationships with partners. Ability to supervise staff and apply relevant laws and procedures. Proficiency with computer systems. Ability to conduct thorough case staffings and meetings.

    Must be physically able to perform required tasks, including field work, lifting up to 30 pounds, driving, and occasional 16-hour shifts.
