Job Description:
The Department of Geography at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a full-time, -month, non-tenure track Lecturer/Assistant Instructional Professor position in Geographic Information Science and Geographic Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI), beginning in August 6. We seek a dedicated and innovative instructor who will substantially contribute to the department’s instructional mission and key focus areas in GIScience and GeoAI. The expected teaching load three courses each fall and spring and two in the summer. The appointment is renewable and eligible for promotion; applicants should be committed to long-term growth and excellence in instruction and program development as this position is not transferable to a tenure track research appointment.
Primary responsibilities include teaching a sequence of foundational and advanced GIS courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Foundational courses will cover essential concepts in mapping, spatial data structures, and geospatial analysis, using proprietary and open-source GIS platforms. Advanced courses include GIS Programming (Python & Java) and Web GIS, with attention to rapidly growing technologies such as cloud-based development environments, high-performance computing, and Large Language Models.
Courses will be designed to build progressively from core skills to advanced applications, complementing existing course offerings and ensuring students are well prepared for professional and research opportunities. The instructor will be expected to maintain high-quality training while balancing the needs of large-enrollment and classroom-based software courses. Faculty in Geography also contribute courses to UF Quest and the CLAS Beyond programs, both of which are encouraged with this position. Additional duties include contributing to program and curriculum development, certificate administration, research mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students, outreach and recruitment, and engagement with university resources such as GeoPlan and HiPerGator.
